Klabunde garners top draw

They came from the north and from the south and points east.

But nobody dislodged Kevin Klabunde from his top qualifying spot Wednesday in the regular men's draw of the 70th Southern Oregon Golf Tournament.

Klabunde shot a 3-under par 69 in Tuesday's local qualifying round at Rogue Valley Country Club and then sat back while the out-of-town players took their turn.

When the final divot settled Wednesday, Klabunde's score stood firm, placing the medalist on the opposite end of the 64-man bracket from defending champion Brooks Newsom as match-play begins today.

Newsom didn't have to qualify, but shot a practice round of 67 Tuesday. Newsom is matched against Bob Kellington today, while Klabunde goes up against Raef Lillesve.

Klabunde is a two-time junior-senior men's champion, but will this finally be the year he walks off the winner of the big draw?

"It's nice to still be playing Monday," Klabunde said Wednesday evening. "It's tough to win, regardless of the division. You just can't have a bad day and win like you can in stroke play."

The 45-year-old Klabunde has bounced back and forth between the regular and junior-senior divisions since 1996, the first time he moved up the age-ladder.

"I take a lot of abuse from my friends when I go up," says Klabunde. "After winning in '96 I said `OK, I'm going back."'

Brad Bills ousted Klabunde in the 1997 quarterfinals, 6 and 5.

"After Bills beat me, I went dragging my tail behind me back to the junior-seniors in 1998 and I'll probably go back next year with my tail between my legs."

Not, however, as long as his putting stays sharp.

"I hit a lot of greens," Klabunde says. "The difference between my good scores and the bad is my putting."

Tommy Smith, the 1989 champion, and Rick Dimick, who each shot 71s Tuesday, had the next best qualifying scores with Bills, the 1993 champ, Kelly Owen, Craig Knips, Doug Luther and Mike Spiegel carding 74s.

Doug Ward, who sandwiched a championship in between Klabunde's titles, shot a 73 Wednesday to match Greg Miller for medalist honors in the junior-senior division. Ward made the turn at 37 and came home in 36. Bob Cox, the 1995 champion had an 82.

John Dunkin paced senior qualifying with a 75 Wednesday, two strokes better than last year's runner-up Bob Harrell shot Tuesday.

Bob Buck, who won the junior-senior title in 1973, carded a 78. Hal Light, a junior-senior winner in 1979 and 1982, registered an 86.

With defending women's champion Laura Tennant bypassing the tournament, a potential final between two local players was set up in Wednesday's qualifying.

Grants Pass' Amanda Nealy, the 1992 winner, shot nines of 27 and 28 to claim medalist honors. Three strokes back was Medford's Reena Eklund, who won her second straight Rogue Valley Stroke Play title Sunday at Cedar Links. After a rough front nine of 41, she came back with a 37 for a 78 total.

Heather Holte, the 1996 champ, had an 82.

Gayle Jantzer, playing in her first senior women's competition, took medalist honors with a 42-45--87. Jantzer advanced to the quarterfinals in regular women's play a year ago.
