Smith-led Pirates top feisty Chiefs

TALENT -- Phoenix senior midfielder Andrea Smith picked the right time for her first two-goal day as the Pirates escaped with a 3-2 win over visiting Rogue River Saturday at Hagler-James Park.

The triumph kept the Pirates atop the District 6 standings with a 5-0-1 record, while the Chieftains slipped to 4-2.

"Certain teams in league always have been our nemesis and Rogue River is one of them," said Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer, whose team finished second to North Valley a year ago. "It's nice to win a game where something is on the line."

Smith buried the winning shot from 12 yards out with seven minutes to play after Jennifer Bones delivered a cross and Helen Shorland dropped the ball back to Smith.

"Even if she hadn't scored two goals," Sporrer said, "Smith would have had a very good game at midfield."

After Rogue River scored 10 minutes into the contest on a goal by junior forward Allison Bailey, Smith made it 1-1 just before the half when she nudged in a 6-yard shot off a corner kick.

Rogue River regained the lead two minutes into the second half on a goal by senior forward Alison Marland, who wove between Phoenix defenders.

The Pirates tied it 15 minutes into the half on a direct kick by Lisa Perry from about 30 yards out.

Phoenix goalie Tara Curtis also had a big effort for the Pirates.

Casey Pete and Alison Marland had assists for Rogue River.

NORTH VALLEY 3, ST. MARY'S 1 -- At Merlin, Malloree Enoch scored two second-half goals as the Knights played stingy defense until giving up a goal in the final three minutes.

Hannah Smyth converted on a give-and-go pass from Jessica Friedman five minutes into the game and the score remained 1-0 until the second half.

Enoch made it 2-0 on an assist by Friedman, then clinched it with a length-of-the-field breakaway with eight minutes to play.

Margo Chamberlain scored St. Mary's goal on a 20-yard shot with three minutes to play.

HENLEY 2, MAZAMA 1 --At Klamath Falls, Kathy Mayer scored the winning goal in the 78th minute as Henley stormed from behind to beat Mazama in the District 6 match.

The visiting Vikings (2-2-1) took the lead in the 15th minute when Carlie Gonzales connected on a rebound shot. The 1-0 advantage stood up until Henley scored twice within a three-minute span late in the match.

Christina Wilson got the Hornets on the board in the 75th minute and Mayer hit the game-winner in the 78th minute.

Henley (3-3) neutralized Mazama striker Dena Young, who had 15 goals in the Vikings' first five matches but went scoreless Saturday.

HIDDEN VALLEY 8, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- At Murphy, Rachael Holley and Nicole Chapman drilled two goals apiece as Hidden Valley gained its first win of the season in a battle of winless teams.
