Talent joins effort to show kids how to have fun safely

TALENT -- From Talent to Washington, D.C., they'll be dancing in the streets Saturday as part of a nationwide effort to teach kids how to party safely.

Safe Night USA will take place simultaneously in thousands of communities across the country, showing teens they can have a good time without drugs, alcohol or violence.

"It's going to be a block party," said event organizer Will Young of the Talent Boys and Girls Club. "There's free food, free fun and free entertainment."

The only rules for the event are: no alcohol, no drugs, no arguments and no violence. Elementary and middle school students are invited to come to West Wagner Street from 2 to 6 p.m., with activities and a dance for high school students from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Talented Feet will perform, and Heat Productions will provide a disc jockey.

"This is my way of getting everyone to open their doors and windows to others in the community," said Young.

Along with Southern Oregon Drug Awareness, Young has brought together representatives from schools and community service agencies to set up informational booths for youth and their families.

Organizers say the event has gained even more importance with the recent school shootings in Littleton, Colo.

"It's good for community people to start talking to each other," said Danya Greene, SODA youth program coordinator. "That's the only way we're going to cure the social ills that face us."

Young says the party's theme is an extension of what he does year-round -- teach conflict resolution skills and provide a positive place for kids. "The message for the kids is there are some people out here that really care about their well-being," said Young.
