United will fly nonstop, Medford to L.A.

Rogue Valley travelers heading to Disneyland and beyond will no longer need to leave part of their vacation time in San Francisco.

Starting Oct. 31, United Airlines will offer two daily jet flights direct from Medford to Los Angeles, the Medford airport announced Thursday.

Airport spokeswoman Kim Stearns was unsure what the fare for the nonstop Shuttle By United flights would be, and United officials could not be reached for comment. The flights will be on 737 jets that hold more than 130 passengers.

Kelly Rasmussen of Jackson Travel Agency said he expects flights to cost about the same as the current Shuttle flights that stop in San Francisco. He said round-trip fares are currently $228 because of fare wars but tend to run around $258 normally. Reservations for the new flights are already available.

The airport also announced that three daily United Express flights on 30-passenger turbo-prop planes to San Francisco will be added but one Shuttle 737 jet flight will likely be eliminated.

Stearns said the details of the new flight schedule are being worked out.

While nonstop service to Southern California is a boon to travelers headed there, Stearns and Rasmussen both said the flights may be of even greater value to people trying to get elsewhere.

"It'll be a connecting point for people that are going on to Honolulu or South America," Stearns said.

Rasmussen agreed, noting that San Francisco's fog often makes for difficult connections.

Airport officials were pushing -- and plan to keep pushing -- for a direct flight to Denver, which would open a host of easy connections to East Coast cities.

The latest addition gives the Medford airport direct connections to four major West Coast cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland.
