Gettman, Brophy share SCL honor

By KRIS HENRY

Cascade Christian's Becky Gettman and Lani Brophy of St. Mary's shared the top honor among their peers recently with the listing of Southern Cascade League all-stars.

The two sophomores each were named co-Most Valuable Players in the SCL for their outstanding accomplishments.

Gettman paced the Challengers with a team-high .510 batting average. The catcher also led Cascade Christian in doubles (5), walks (23) and strikeouts (6).

"She had a great year," Cascade Christian coach Wally Nye said. "She loves to hit in the tough situations, and she got quite a few extra-base hits because of that."

Gettman suffered a knee injury during the season that slowed her down a bit, but certainly not enough to dissuade the SCL voters.

"She's had two good years in a row," Nye said of the sophomore. "She's got some room for improvement in her catching and blocking balls, but she improved immensely in her throws to second base. I think she cut down something like 60 percent of the runners this year.

"She's got a real potential to play college ball."

Brophy was solid both as a pitcher and at the plate, posting a 7-4 record and 2.77 ERA for St. Mary's. She struck out 86 batters while only walking 38. Brophy also paced the Crusaders with 27 singles, 27 RBIs and a .533 batting average. The sophomore also tied for the team lead in hits (32) and doubles (3).

Cascade Christian received two other first-team nods in junior outfielder/third baseman Shelly Nicholson and junior pitcher Cheryl Gordon. Nicholson posted a .313 average with 21 hits, while Gordon went 7-5 with a 2.54 ERA and 121 strikeouts. Gordon also led Cascade Christian with 27 hits and 20 RBIs in posting a .370 average.

Sophomore catcher Shawna Jackson also earned first-team honors for St. Mary's, notching a team-high 34 runs, 15 steals and four triples for a .464 average.

Cascade Christian coach Wally Nye rounded out the top honors for the Challengers by being named SCL coach of the year.

"It's a team honor," said Nye. "Our whole team earned that. My players and assistants, they all played a part in that."

Despite having only two seniors and two juniors, Cascade Christian finished 16-9 overall and won the SCL with an 8-2 mark.
