don't like park's new track A new BMX track at Bear Creek Park in Medford is getting a cool reception from the teenagers who use it daily. Among other things, the bikers complain that the dirt is too hard, the jumps are too rigid and the track has no shade. "It's the only one we got, so we'll use it," said Jered McLain, 16, of Medford. The new track needs to get some of its problems worked out, said Greg Jones, director of the Medford Parks and Recreation Department. He said the city will fix what problems it can. "They (the teenagers) have good suggestions," Jones said. The BMX track opened about a month ago, and replaces a makeshift track that bikers had used for years at the park. Jones said the new track is on a spot with more land, giving the teenagers a bit more room. But bikers pine for the older track. "They should have just left the other one alone," said Jeremy George, 13, of Medford. "That track was perfect," said Hunter Albright, 15, of Medford. "It's what we wanted." More than a dozen bikers gave a laundry list of complaints about the new track. They said the hard dirt causes scrapes when they fall, and without soft dirt they no longer can build their own jumps. Duane Clark, 23, of Medford, said he wished the city had consulted riders before building a new track. Jones said the city did get input, including from the owner of a bike shop, a contractor and the contractor's children. He said the city can fix most of the problems. He agreed that the surface of the new track is hard, and the city will have a volunteer water the track to soften it. But he said the city doesn't want to make the jumps more malleable. The jumps that riders made at the old track were too difficult for some riders, causing injuries. And Jones noted that park workers have seen 35 to 40 bikers on the track at times. Most of the bikers who complained agreed that they come back almost every day. "It's still fun, but it gets boring after a while," McLain said. |
