Suspect in Illinois killings will receive ID hearing

A Medford man accused in the 1996 murder of a young couple in the Chicago area was in court Tuesday.

James Thivel, 27, was represented by public defender Matt Kaplan, who asked Jackson County Judge Patricia Crain for a pre-extradition identification hearing. Identification hearings verify that a defendant is who the state says he is.

Crain agreed but set no date. She also ordered Thivel back to jail, without bail.

Thivel was arrested May 24 in Medford in connection with the deaths of Eva Caudell, 20, and Robert Farberger, 24, whose bodies were found Jan. 10, 1996, in a car in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines.

Authorities said the couple died from multiple gunshot wounds to the back of the head.

Thivel, who moved to Oregon shortly after the shootings, knew the victims and always has been a suspect in the case, Des Plaines detectives said.

They have refused to discuss the case in detail, saying only that the arrest was based on new evidence and witnesses.
