Fairy tale run ends for Cavers

EUGENE -- Freshman Amy Harris shattered Grants Pass' glass slipper Monday afternoon as she pitched North Eugene to an 8-0 Class 4A state quarterfinal softball victory.

Harris struck out 11, walked none and allowed just one hit in six innings of work before giving way to reliever junior Jennifer Harris, her sister, in the seventh.

The Cinderella Grants Pass squad, picked to finish last in the Southern Oregon Conference, tied for third place then won three straight state playoff games -- including two against top-10 teams -- before running into North Eugene.

"The old train ride ended today," said first-year Grants Pass coach Clay Rounsaville. "We knew that Amy Harris is an outstanding pitcher. She threw riseballs and our kids chased them.

"They're a carbon copy of North Medford. They wait and wait and when you make a mistake, they make you pay for it. It's not a good way to go out, but we had a tremendous year."

The Cavers finished their best-ever season with a 20-8 record.

The victory propelled the Highlanders (20-8), the Midwestern League runner-up, into a Wednesday afternoon semifinal match-up against North Medford at Fagone Field.

Amy Harris completely silenced Grants Pass' bats until the fifth inning when junior Alayna Petersen broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single. After retiring the first 12 batters she faced, Harris got the next six following Petersen's hit.

North broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dani Jodoin started the rally with a double followed by Becky Weston's single that put runners on the corners. Jackie Rojas drew a walk to load the bases. Amy Cottrell singled to right to score the first run, then Kelly Mannion grounded into a force at the plate.

But an error on Rachel Knudson's grounder allowed Rojas and Cottrell to score.

The Highlanders added two more runs in the fifth. Tina Carlson walked and Jodoin reached on a fielder's choice. A double steal led to both runners scoring when the ball sailed into the outfield.

North Eugene added three more runs in the top of the sixth.

With two out in the seventh, Petersen singled to left for her second hit of the day. Then Kathy Richards reached on an error before Harris recorded a strikeout to end the game.

Grants Pass loses just three starters -- outfielders Teresa Darland and Aubrey Lee and pitcher Becky Heater.
