| Helen Leona Stinger
Helen Leona Stinger, 81, of Medford, died Thursday (Dec. 31, 1998) in a local foster
home. Arrangements will be announced by Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
James Joseph Ballou
The memorial service for James Joseph Ballou will be
at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trail Christian Fellowship. Pastors Rick Booye and Doug Higuera will
officiate.
Mr. Ballou, 51, of Eagle Point, died Dec. 23, 1998, at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
He was born March 28, 1947, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Mr. Ballou moved to the Rogue Valley 27 years ago from California.
On Feb. 2, 1980, in Shady Cove, he married Irene "Renee" Botello, who
survives.
He worked for Greg Grissom Construction, Batzer Construction and had been a
sub-contractor.
He was a member of Trail Christian Fellowship and enjoyed motorcycles, carving wood and
building furniture.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Brent, Grants Pass; a daughter, Judy
Walton, in Alabama; his father, Robert, Crescent City, Calif.; three sisters, Barbara
Lewis, Cathy Owen and Lorraine Walsh, all in California; and six grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his mother, Anna Mae Ballou.

Betty Jane Garrett
Betty Jane Garrett, 83, of Medford, died Monday
(Dec. 28, 1998) at her home. A private service was held.
She was born Betty Higbee on Feb. 11, 1915, in Moline-Rock Island, Ill.
On Aug. 6, 1938, in Rock Island, Ill., she married Jay Garrett, who died in 1979.
Mrs. Garrett moved to the Rogue Valley six years ago from Culver City, Calif.
She was a life member of the Unitarian Universalist Church and member and president of
the Culver City parent-teacher organization and the Culver City Women's Club.
Mrs. Garrett was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling and making cookies for her
grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Beth Jackson and Natalie Garrett, both Ashland; four
grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Alice H. Herod
Alice H. Herod, 76, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec.
30, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.
Blanche L. Hargens
The graveside service for Blanche L. Hargens will be
at 1 p.m. Monday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.
Mrs. Hargens, 96, of Medford, died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) in Medford.
She was born Blanche L. Rantala on Dec. 17, 1902, in Fort Bragg, Calif.
On Dec. 9, 1933, in San Francisco, Calif., she married Capt. Webster E. Hargens, who
died in 1976. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1962 from San Francisco.
Mrs. Hargens was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Robert, San Francisco, and Richard, in California; two
grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Conger-Morris Funeral
Directors, Medford.
L. Rachel Broome
The funeral for L. Rachel Broome will be at 11 a.m.
Tuesday at Central Valley Chapel, Central Point. A nephew, Randall Ribiera, will
officiate. Private interment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mrs. Broome, 76, of Ashland, formerly of Central Point, died Dec. 24, 1998, in Medford.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Senior Center, 510 E. Main St.,
Medford, OR 97504.
She was born L. Rachel Kelly on Oct. 1, 1922, in Nashua, N.H.
On Aug. 5, 1946, in Berkeley, Calif., she married Elgin M. Broome, who preceded her in
death.
Mrs. Broome was an office manager for an electronics firm in California before moving
to Oregon.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi in Medford, Medford Methodist Social Group, the
Emblem Club, Lady Elks, Medford and Central Point senior centers, Rebekah Lodge and Oregon
State Grange in Central Point.
Mrs. Broome volunteered with the Britt Festival and Loaves and Fishes, and was an avid
quilter.
Survivors include a sister, Barbara La Rue, in Florida. She was preceded in death by a
sister, Dorothy Ribiera.
Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at Central Valley Chapel, 800 S.
Front St., Central Point.

Doris E. Jobe
The memorial service for Doris E. Jobe will be at 2
p.m. Monday in the Ashland First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Scenic Hills
Memorial Park, Ashland.
Mrs. Jobe, 84, of Ashland, died Sunday (Dec. 27, 1998) at her home.
She was born Doris Clark on Sept. 20, 1914, in Marshall, Minn., and raised in Big
Timber, Mont.
Mrs. Jobe attended the University of Denver and completed nurse's training at Stanford
University Hospital.
During World War II, she served in the 59th Evacuation Hospital unit which followed the
armies through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, France and Germany. While serving in
Germany she was awarded the Bronze Star.
On Jan. 19, 1946, in Billings, Mont., she married Stan Jobe, who survives.
After moving to Salem, Mrs. Jobe was assistant chief nurse at Salem Memorial Hospital.
She lived in Burns for six years before moving to Ashland in 1956.
Mrs. Jobe was a nurse with the Jackson County Health Department for six years, retiring
in 1980.
She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Ashland First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Janis Kuchler, Pendleton;
and three sisters, May Mckenzie, Big Timber, Mont., and Betty Jones and Eleanor Sauters,
both Billings. Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Don Day Hartley
The graveside service for Don Day Hartley will be at
2 p.m. Saturday in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Brant Rigby of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints, Medford, will officiate.
Mr. Hartley, 63, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at his home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice,
2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.
He was born June 19, 1935, in Cedar City, Utah.
Mr. Hartley moved to the Rogue Valley 42 years ago from Utah.
On Nov. 3, 1956, in Medford, he married Mavis B. Stephenson, who survives.
Mr. Hartley retired in 1990.
He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
and the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed working on old cars, camping and fishing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Marty Holland, Dawn
Palmerton and Robin Plankenhorn, all Medford; his mother, LaVonda Beaver, Eagle Point; two
sisters, Hazel Knudsen, Oxnard, Calif., and Clarece Hunt, in Utah; and eight
grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Conger-Morris Funeral
Directors, Medford.
June E. Carlson
The funeral Mass for June E. Carlson will be at 11
a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the River Catholic Church, Rogue River. The Rev. Todd
Molinari will officiate. Interment will be in Woodville Cemetery, Rogue River.
Mrs. Carlson, 72, of Rogue River, died Monday (Dec. 28, 1998) at Three Rivers Community
Hospital, Grants Pass.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the River Catholic Church, Building
Fund, P.O. Box 1596, Rogue River, OR 97537.
She was born June Smith on Jan. 8, 1926, in Oakland, Calif.
Mrs. Carlson moved to the Rogue Valley 18 years ago.
She was an artist and teacher.
She was a member of Our Lady of the River Catholic Church and Birdie's Nest Quilting
Group.
Survivors include a son, Lance, Reno, Nev.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Gordon L.; and a son, Larry B.

Mildred Griffith Robertson, 90, of Medford, died
Wednesday (Dec. 30, 1998) at her home. Arrangements will be announced by Rogue Valley

Donald E. Gibbs
Donald E. Gibbs, 76, of Medford, died Monday (Dec.
28, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Mr. Gibbs served in the U.S. Navy during World
War II. Wednesday's obituary incorrectly stated that he served in the Army. |
