Conference Notes

NEW SKIPPER --Ashland has its third head coach in as many years in Doug Stover. Stover, 50, led the Grizzly JVs to a 15-7 record last season. He moved to Ashland from Fairfield, Calif., a couple of years ago after working for the Department of Defense for many years. Stover has coached at virtually every level -- from Little League to college-aged players.

STAR POWER --Eagle Point isn't expected to contend for the SOC championship, but the Eagles might have the league's MVP in senior outfielder Mike Newmann. Newmann has been a first-team all-conference selection each of the past two years and batted .500 last season.

Newmann is also a fine pitcher but may be relegated to short relief due to soreness in his pitching shoulder, Eagles coach Tom Britton said.

Newmann's younger brother, Nick, is the team's cleanup hitter and also pitches.

SNAKEBITTEN -- Grants Pass has already lost two of its best players to injury. Junior second baseman Gabe Barbee, the Cavemen's leadoff hitter, broke his thumb in the season-opener against Marshfield, and third baseman Jason Anderson broke his hand the following game against Rogue River. Barbee is expected to be sidelined for two weeks while Anderson is out indefinitely. Both players homered in their first at-bats.

LONG DROUGHT --Klamath Union coach Dave Steen has led his team to seven SOC titles and three state championships since taking over the program 22 years ago, but the Pelicans haven't advanced to the playoffs since 1993. Klamath stumbled to a 2-14 conference mark last season and has struggled to a 1-8 mark so far this spring, albeit against tough competition, mostly in California.
