Medford boxer Sleezer falls in Golden Gloves

BILOXI, Miss. _ Bulldog Boxing Club's Sam Sleezer had to fight more than District of Columbia champion Sean Harper Wednesday in the first round of the Golden Gloves national championship.

The Oregon and Western Regional heavyweight champion lost 10 pounds after arriving in town. He entered the ring at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum weighing just 184 pounds.

As a result, Sleezer (18-8) couldn't put up much of a fight and was outpointed by Harper in the single-elimination tourney. Harper will fight in today's semifinals.

All-city track meet set Friday at Newland

The Medford All-City Elementary Track Camp and Meet takes place from 3 to 5:45 p.m. Friday at Newland Track inside Spiegelberg Stadium, adjacent to South Medford High.

The meet is open to fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls.

There will be six running events and four field events. The running events are the 50-yard dash, 200 meters, 400 meters, mile run, 400-meter relay and hurdles. The field events are softball throw, running long jump, standing long jump and high jump.

Golf tournament to benefit water polo

Today is the final day to register for the Ashland High water polo fund-raising golf tournament and barbecue May 9 at Oak Knoll Golf Course.

The cost is $65 a person, which includes an 18-hole, four-person scramble and the barbecue. For those who only want to attend the barbecue, the cost is $10.
