Roseburg throttles Ashland twice

ROSEBURG -- Ashland failed to play the spoiler in Southern Oregon Conference baseball Tuesday.

Roseburg solidified its hold on fourth place in the SOC with a pair of 13-run victories over the Grizzlies at Legion Field. The Indians took the opener 13-3 in six innings, then disposed of Ashland in five innings in the second game, 13-0.

In Game 1, Roseburg ended the contest early by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning. The Indians capitalized on six hits and three walks to take a 13-3 lead.

Noah Hartzell and Roger Walsh collected two hits each for Ashland.

Roseburg's Tim Sustaire went 4-for-4 and scored four runs in the nightcap.

NORTH MEDFORD 17, DOUGLAS 0 -- North Medford won its 11th straight game in a five-inning, non-league contest at Miles Field.

North pitcher Jason Crandall (4-1) limited the Trojans to two hits.

Colby Gonzales went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Black Tornado's 18-hit attack. Steve DeClerck slammed a three-run double in North's eight-run fourth.

Senior catcher Lane Forsloff opened the fourth with a home run, then added a single latter in the inning.

North Medford (17-5) will face South Medford in a key Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Field.

CRATER 11, NORTH VALLEY 0 -- At Central Point, Craig Knight and Rick Westergren slammed home runs as Crater improved to 16-4 with a non-conference victory in six innings at Anhorn Field.

Crater pitchers Brent Foster and Jake Stickley combined for a five-hit shutout and didn't walk a batter.

BROOKINGS 16, SOUTH MEDFORD 10 -- At Brookings, Clinton Burr connected for a grand slam and had five RBIs for Brookings (14-6) in the non-conference slugfest.

Chuck Shine went 4-for-5 and scored twice to pace South Medford. David Thrapp added three hits, while Tim Pickens had two for the Panthers.

EAGLE POINT 4, PHOENIX 3 -- At Eagle Point, sophomore pitcher Jesse Stevenson picked up his first victory of the season by striking out seven in a nine-inning complete game.

The Eagles scored the winning run when Carlos Stevenson singled with one out, Mike Holte walked and Dan Shopp hit an RBI double.

Luke Scott slammed two doubles and a home run in five plate appearances for the Eagles. Scott hit a two-run homer in the third inning for his fifth of the season.

For Phoenix, Aaron Hull went 2-for-5 and Ray Castillo provided an RBI single in the second inning.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 4-6, ROGUE RIVER 3-4 -- At Rogue River, Illinois Valley extended Rogue River's Skyline Conference losing streak to 12 games with the sweep.

In the opener, Rogue River (2-18, 1-14 Skyline) outhit the Cougars 12-3, but Illinois Valley bunched two of its three hits together in the seventh inning to score the winning run. IV scored when Chris Paul singled and Jared Larsen delivered an RBI double.

Jarod Garwood, the losing pitcher, went 3-for-3 in the opener and scored a run.

Freshman pitcher Colin Hanley made his varsity debut for the Chieftains in the nightcap. He was victimized by four unearned runs.

For Illinois Valley, Mike Melton, Jim Pope and Paul each had two hits.

Rogue River's Casey Cunningham went 6-for-7, scored three runs and had one RBI in the doubleheader.

Softball

ASHLAND 9, CRATER 8, (9 innings) -- At Central Point, Christina Cooley's RBI single in the ninth inning scored Angela Fleisher with the winning run in the non-conference game.

Sara Combes led Ashland with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while teammates Whitney Mayers and Fleisher added two hits each.

For Crater (11-10), Natalia Smith, Kara Ray and Kiley Nixon each had a pair of hits.
