Lakeview edges Phoenix in twin bill

LAKEVIEW -- Phoenix and Lakeview entered Tuesday's key Skyline Conference softball doubleheader tied for second with 11-2 league records.

Lakeview emerged in a dominant state playoff position with a twin bill sweep. The Honkers prevailed 3-2 in 11 innings in the first game, then posted a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

The teams played two games because the second game of an April 11 doubleheader at Phoenix was postponed due to wet weather.

"If we take care of business in our remaining games we'll go to state," Lakeview coach Rick Gage said.

Defensive mistakes proved costly for the Pirates in both ends of the doubleheader.

The Honkers got the winning run in the bottom of 11th inning of the opener on two errors on one play. And they scored the winning run in Game 2 on an error.

"The teams were really well-matched," Gage said. "Our girls, when they needed to, stepped up. They didn't get flustered or panic. In the tough defensive situations they made the plays."

In Game 1, Phoenix held a 2-0 lead. The Pirates scored a run in the third when Serena Wills and Tara Curtis singled and Wills scored on an error. In the fourth, Carla Roberts reached base on an error and Beth Battazzo delivered a two-out, RBI single.

Lakeview answered with a single run in the fourth inning and tied the score on Brandi Yocum's RBI single in the sixth.

Yocum scored the winning run from first base when Katie Ruda grounded into a fielder's choice; two Phoenix infielders made throwing errors on the play to hand the Honkers the victory.

Ruda's RBI single and a two-run base hit by Andrea Gillogley staked the Honkers to a second-inning 3-0 lead in the nightcap.

In the third, singles by Tori Saddler, Roberts and Brie King accounted for two Pirates' runs.

Lakeview scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning when Mandy Longacre tripled with two outs and scored when Phoenix first baseman Curtis could not come up with a grounder.

Beth Furtado led the Lakeview attack with two hits in each game.

Phoenix had four players -- Saddler, Roberts, Battazzo and Molly Pendergast -- with two hits each in the nightcap.
