Erma Donaldson

The funeral for Erma Donaldson will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Donaldson, 88, of Central Point, died Thursday (April 30, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Erma Hudson on Oct. 17, 1909, in Benton County, Ark. On April 29, 1991, she married Ashley Donaldson, who survives.

Mrs. Donaldson lived for many years in Southern California, moving to the Rogue Valley in 1965. She was active in many organizations, including Equestrian Trails, the Emblem Club, the El Monte Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Gold Hill Grange.

She and her second husband, Burton Albrecht, built and operated Leisure Pines Mobile Home Park in Central Point. In the 1960s and 70s she operated a business, Erma's African Violets, specializing in the plants she loved.

For the past several years, she took pride in promoting the country music career of her husband.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a sister, Vada Reeves of Trail; a daughter, Cheryl Ewaldsen of Edmonds, Wash.; an several nieces, nephews, step-children and step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Fred Smock and Burton Albrecht and two brothers.

Dorothy Ayres

The committal service for Dorothy M. Garrison Ayres will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ayres, 69, of Central Point, died Sunday (April 26, 1998) at Hearthstone in Medford.

She was born Dorothy Garrison on Dec. 11, 1928 in Medford. On Sept. 28, 1946, in Reno, Nev., she married Chester L. Ayres, who died in 1975. She lived in the Rogue Valley all her life.

Mrs. Ayres enjoyed reading and ceramics and was a doll maker and collector.

Survivors include three brothers, Don Garrison, Curt Garrison and Otis Garrison; a son, Reggie Ayres of Medford; a daughter, Margaret Barrow of Carlsbad, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Merrill Paddock

Merrill Paddock, 72, of Ruch, died Saturday (May 2, 1998) at his home. Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services.

 

Susan Golden

A graveside service for Susan Ranee Golden will be at 1 p.m. today at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford. Viewing will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Central Valley Chapel, 800 Front St., Central Point. Pastor Rick Cohen of the Applegate Christian Fellowship and Pastor Tom Sabens of Hope Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Mrs. Golden, 40, of Medford, died Thursday (April 30, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born on Oct. 31, 1957 in Medford. On June 11, 1987 in Ashland, she married Grady Golden, who survives. She lived in the Rogue Valley all her life.

Mrs. Golden graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1976 and later from the Medford College of Beauty. She owned and operated the French Quarter salon in Ashland. She was a member of Applegate and Hope Christian Fellowship churches. She enjoyed spending time with her family, the outdoors, fishing, skiing, camping and cooking.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Skyler Golden, and a daughter, Shelli Golden, both of Medford; parents Kenneth and Hazel Vogel Oman of Medford; and brothers Bob Oman and Ron Oman of Central Point.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care.

 

Anne Eaton

Anne Eaton, 58, of Jacksonville, died Saturday (May 2, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

 

Billie Jean Phillips

The memorial service for Billie Jean Phillips will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland.

Mrs. Phillips, 70, of Ashland, died Sunday (May 3, 1998) at her home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to Adventure Unlimited, 5201 S. Quebec St., Englewood, CO 80111 or to a favorite charity.

Mrs. Phillips was born Bille Jean Fate on Nov. 9, 1927 in Mountain View, Calif., and raised in John Day, Ore. She married Jack Howard Davies in 1948 in La Grande and raised four children in Hermiston.

She moved with her children to Ashland in 1964, where she attended Southern Oregon College, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in education. At age 40, she became an elementary school teacher and taught for the next 18 years at Jacksonville Elementary School, specializing in music.

In March 1968, she married Arthur Thomas Phillips, who died in 1996. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist and was a church reader for three years. She obtained a license to practice Christian Science nursing in 1997. She was a past regent of the Latagwa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She sang professionally and recreationally for more than 50 years, including time with the Rogue Valley Chorale and various church choirs.

Survivors include a brother, Dr. Hugh Fate Jr., of Fairbanks, Alaska; two sons, Kirk Fate Davies of Ashdon, England, and Andrew Lee Davies of San Mateo, Calif; two daughters, Jan Kathleen Davies of Belmont Shore, Calif., and Julie Ann Hitchcock of Bozeman, Mont.; six grandchildren, six nieces and nephews and 18 foster children.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Elsie P. Moore

Elsie Pearl Moore, 87, of Central Point, died Sunday (May 3, 1998) at her home. Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors of Medford.

`Rusty' Smullin helped husband create KOBI-TV

Patricia D. "Rusty" Smullin, who with her husband, William B. Smullin, founded Medford television station KOBI and the country's oldest independent continuously operated broadcast company, has died. She was 80.

Rusty Smullin died Saturday at a Portland hospital following a heart attack. She had lived at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford for 22 years.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Smullin Health Education Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford.

Following a luncheon reception, a burial service will be held at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Gales Creek Diabetic Camp Foundation for Children with Diabetes, 415 N. State St., Suite 136, Lake Oswego, OR 97034.

Married in 1945, Rusty and Bill Smullin were co-founders of California Oregon Broadcasting Inc., which encompasses Medford television station KOBI. Bill Smullin died in 1995.

For many years, Rusty Smullin hosted the "Aunt Polly Show" on KIEM-TV in Eureka, Calif., and on KOBI-TV in Medford. Each week, Aunt Polly honored children who had had a birthday that week with a party on TV.

"Without a doubt, the characteristic that was spoken of about her the most was her unbelievable smile," Patsy Smullin of Medford recalled Sunday, remembering her mother. "She had a sort of magical sweetness about her -- and that's not just me, that's everyone."

She was born Patricia Duell in 1918 in New Rockford, N.D., the daughter of Oroville and Juliette Duell. She was the granddaughter of North Dakota Gov. Eli Shortridge and his wife, Anna, and of Judge Dallas Deull and his wife, Viola.

The Duells moved to Spokane, Wash., when she was an infant. She graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in psychology and attended graduate school at New York University.

She pursued a career as an assistant executive with the Campfire Council in Fort Worth, Texas, and Washington. She transferred to Eureka, where she was named executive director of the Humboldt County Campfire Council in 1944.

The Smullins raised five children in homes in Eureka and Medford.

Rusty Smullin is survived by her sister, Carol Connelly of Spokane; three daughters, Patsy Smullin of Medford, Shirley Smullin of Grants Pass and Carol Anne Brown of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, David Smullin of Los Altos, Calif., and Don Smullin of Blaine, Wash., and nine grandchildren.

Conger-Morris Funeral Directors of Medford is in charge of arrangements.
