GRANTS PASS -- South Medford sprinters Janette Martin and Amois Gonzalez enhanced their reputations as two of the best in Oregon at the Grants Pass Rotary track meet on Saturday.

The Panther duo was responsible for three meet records and were awarded co-athletes of the event, which featured some the state's best track and field performers.

South Medford also demonstrated it belongs in the state's top echelon by winning both the boys' and girls' team championships against more than 30 other schools.

In a tightly contested race for the team titles, South's girls scored 62 points to edge Beaverton, which totalled 58, while the Panther boys totaled 60 points to finish three points ahead of historic power South Eugene.

"I wouldn't say it was a perfect day for us," South Medford coach Bill Rowan said, "but we got the job done. We managed to chip away and get points here and there."

Martin and Gonzalez did more than chip away. They blew away the field by taking the top two places in both the 200 and 400 meters.

Martin won the 400 in a meet record and listed state-best time of 57 seconds flat, with Gonzalez placing second. Martin broke Gonzalez' 400 meet record time set last year when South finished second in the girls' competition.

"Janette is coming into her own as an athlete," Rowan said. "She's running tougher and tougher every day."

In the 200, it was Gonzalez tying the meet record of 25.4, which is the second fastest time listed in the state this season, and Martin placing second.

Additionally, the two girls ran legs on the Panthers' 1,600 relay -- along with senior Amanda Anders and freshman Emily Perttu -- that set a meet record and bettered its previous state-best mark with a time of 4:01.2.

"They're both coming along beautifully this season," Rowan said. "The quality of their marks is what's so impressive."

In the boys meet, Tim Meador won the 800 for South's only individual victory. The Panthers also won the 1,600 relay with a season-best time (3:26.8) and got key multiple contributions from Eric McKenzie (200, 1,600 relay), Tyler Carlton (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, pole vault) and Perry Custance (1,500, 1,600 relay).

Meador's 800 time of 1:54.4 was a meet and school record and second-best listed time in the state. He shaved almost a second off his previous best mark.

"The impressive thing is he ran so fast by himself," Rowan said. "After the first 100 meters he was off and running all alone. It's much tougher to run fast times when you're by yourself."

Roseburg's Matt Brown topped his previous state best in the high jump with a 6-10 leap and John Stiegeler of Marshfield heaved the javelin 202-4 for another listed state best mark.
