Cascade Christian rolls past Butte Falls, 11-1, 24-0

WHITE CITY - Cascade Christian kept its focus and dispatched Butte Falls in two five-inning games in District 6 baseball Friday at the V.A. Domiciliary's Memorial Field.

What was impressive was not necessarily the Challengers' 11-1 and 24-0 victories over the Loggers, but the manner in which they accomplished the task.

Cascade Christian (15-3, 7-1 Dist. 6) committed only one error in the doubleheader and its pitchers combined for just two walks.

"Butte Falls has been very competitive in the past, but they're down this year," Cascade Christian coach John Bruce said. "Our biggest concern was to play at a level you're capable of playing at. You don't want to lose your intensity."

In the opener, junior pitcher Tim Alvarez (7-1) struck out seven and limited the Loggers to two hits.

Leadoff hitter Don Jenkins did his job with three hits, three runs and four stolen bases.

In Game 2, pitchers Aaron Beamish and Bryan Edwards combined for a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

Nolan Roberts provided the spark at the plate with three hits and five RBIs.

Barnes leads SOU at district tennis

CALDWELL, Idaho - Southern Oregon University's Janelle Barnes won the decisive match against Albertson College and registered the Raiders' only victory against Lewis-Clark State College at the NAIA Northwest Regional women's tennis tournament Friday.

Southern Oregon split a pair of dual matches in the four-team round robin event. The Raiders defeated Albertson, 5-4, then lost to Lewis-Clark, 8-1.

Against Albertson, Barnes defeated Wendy Halverson, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to give Southern Oregon the win over Albertson.

"She showed some real patience and competitive spirit to pull it out," Southern Oregon coach Sally Jones said.

Against Lewis-Clark, Barnes defeated Jen Wright, 6-3, 6-3.

"She has a chance of being the regional champion at No. 5 if she wins Saturday's match against Northwest Nazarene," said Jones. "It's pretty certain Lewis-Clark State will win the regional title. We're hoping for second place, which is a step up from last year's fourth place."

The Raiders need a victory over Northwest Nazarene today to clinch second in the tournament. SOU has defeated Northwest Nazarene twice previously this season.
