Fairfield trips Mustangs in title game

RENO, Nev. -- The Medford Mustangs found out on Sunday just how hard it is to beat a team three straight times in a season.

After two defeats at the hands of the Mustangs earlier in the season, Fairfield (Calif.) Solono Concrete returned the favor, handing Medford (18-7) a 4-2 defeat in the championship game of the Peppermill Classic Baseball Tournament.

Mustang starter Graham Foster breezed through the first two innings, yielding zero hits, but was rudely greeted in the third by a leadoff home run by Fairfield's Damien Lopez for a 1-0 lead. Later that inning the lead increased to 2-0 thanks to back-to-back doubles by Chris Henry and Noah Battle.

After Fairfield took a 3-0 lead in the fourth, the Mustangs cut the lead to 3-1 on a Jason Brownell RBI double that scored Brent Foster.

Fairfield starter Trevor Thornton escaped further damage when center fielder Battle flagged down a Jimmy Pickrel line drive that stranded runners on second and third.

Medford cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when catcher Lane Forsloff scored on a Brent Foster groundout, but that was all they could muster off Thornton, who struck out none but was aided by one defensive gem after another.

Medford's Brent Foster and Ryan Petersen were both named to the all-tournament team.

The Mustangs return to action on Tuesday at 2 p.m. when they take on the Chico (Calif.) Nuts at Anhorn Field.
