| The memorial service for Raymond
Gillen, long advocate of youth activities in Yreka, Calif., will be at 4 p.m. Monday in
Delphic Elementary School gymnasium, 1420 Oberline Road, Yreka. Jim Eckmen will officiate. Mr. Gillen, 50, of Yreka, died Thursday (Feb. 19, 1998) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford. Memorial contributions may be made to United Scholarship Inc., P.O. Box 1328, Yreka, Calif., 96097 or the YMCA Endowment Fund, 350 Foothill Drive, Yreka, Calif., 96097. Known by Yreka school children as "Ray," Mr. Gillen worked at Yreka schools for many years, first at Phoenix High School, then at the time of his death, was maintenance supervisor for the Yreka Elementary School District. He particularly promoted track, field, and cross-country sports. Mr. Gillen maintained the school's track in addition to building a retaining wall and landscaping the area. He was born Oct. 2, 1947, in Lock Haven, Pa. On June 23, 1973, in Santa Barbara, Calif., he married Karen Reynolds, who survives. They immediately moved to Yreka from Santa Barbara. Mr. Gillen traveled with and designed courses for horse shows throughout California. The highlight of this career was being selected to assist in establishing the 1984 Olympics' equestrian venue in Los Angeles. Mr. Gillen, in the U.S. Navy, served two tours of duty in Vietnam during the war, serving in the Seabees. He later retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve after 20 years as an equipment operator first class. He was a member of the Naval Reserve unit in Central Point. He was active in Miner Power, a group of friends who raised funds for youth sports. The high school's team is the Miners. He also was a member of the Yreka YMCA. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Aaron and Justin, both Yreka; two brothers, Randy Gillen and Kenny Sohmer, both Lock Haven; and two sisters, Sybil Weigel and Ginger Grieb, both Lock Haven. Church. The Rev. Kelly Vandehey will officiate. Mrs. Hutchinson, 88, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 17, 1998) in the Rogue Valley Manor Health Center. She was born Oct. 13, 1909, in Reading, Pa. On Feb. 4, 1984, in Laguna Niguel, Calif., she married Richard C. Hutchinson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988. Mrs. Hutchinson, a registered nurse, was in nursing for 25 years in California. She retired 23 years ago. She attended Sacred Heart and Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic churches. She enjoyed gardening, animals, and reading. Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Mary Mahoney Henie, Ashland; a son, Clark Fergus, Tustin, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Gary Matsdorf of Faith Bible Center will officiate. Mrs. Carlson, 77, of Medford, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) at her home. She was born Marilee Johnson on Oct. 14, 1920, in Drummond, Okla. On June 20, 1948, in San Pedro, Calif., she married Harold A. Carlson, who died in September 1981. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993, from Long Beach, Calif. She enjoyed traveling and cooking. Survivors include two daughters, Merrie Morgan, Central Point, and Debbe Mundt, El Cajon, Calif.; a son, Greg, Salem; two sisters, Dorothy Parker, Las Vegas, Nev., and Twink Yost, in Oklahoma; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. p.m. Monday in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Calif. Mrs. Stoltz, 99, of Medford, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) in Three Fountains Nursing Center. She was born Vida Emma Henzie on Oct. 3, 1898, in Clinton, Iowa. On Nov. 3, 1915, in Sterling, Colo., she married Bert R. Stoltz, who died in 1970. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1981 from Huntington Park, Calif. Mrs. Stoltz was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Pythian Sisters, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Emblem Club. Survivors include a son, Orville D., Medford; a brother, Morse Henzie, Lakewood, Calif.; two sisters, Ila Isham, Clearlake, Calif., and Ruth Hawkans, North Bend; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. calling Perls at 772-5488. Mrs. Avery, 89, of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at a Medford foster care home. She was born Ethel Chenoweth on Oct. 26, 1908, in Langlois. In March 1929, she married Les Gibson, who died in 1956. They lived in Coos Bay where she worked at a veneer plant before moving to Medford in 1934. They moved to Prospect in 1937 and back to Medford in 1952. In 1957 she married Ernest Avery, who died in 1979. She worked at Harry and David's for 17 years. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Getogether Club, and Sojourners. She also enjoyed dancing and playing cards. Survivors include two sons, Raymond J. Gibson, Medford, and James Gibson, Eugene; a daughter, Janet Morris, Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. On Jan. 21, 1995, in Ashland, he married Lynn Mulherin, who survives. Mr. Buell, an artist, also enjoyed gold panning, fishing, and computers. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Jayson Voorhes, Sonora, Calif.; a daughter, Deanna DeLeon-Grady, Sonora; his father, Jack Buell, Tulare, Calif.; his mother, Margret Buell, Lindsay, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Standridge, Porterville, Calif., and three grandchildren. | Veda D. Colle, 89, of Medford, died Friday (Feb. 20, 1998)
at Providence Medford Medical Center. No local service is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. She was born Veda Haney on March 11, 1908, in Oregon. She moved to the Rogue Valley 11 years ago from Santa Rosa, Calif. A beautician, she was with the City of Paris and other salons in San Francisco before retiring 27 years ago. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Medford and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Survivors include two nieces, Mary Gerwick, Medford, and Patricia Stone, McMinnville. | Harry S. Steele, formerly of Phoenix and Medford, died
Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) in Springfield. His home was in Eugene. A private service is planned. Interment will be in the Phoenix Cemetery. He was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Lambert, Mont. Mr. Steele attended Phoenix schools and graduated from Phoenix High School. On Nov. 10, 1938, at the Blue Flower Lodge that later became known as the Colver House in Phoenix, he married Virginia Porter, who died in 1984. Mr. Steele worked for Pacific Power & Light for more than 30 years, retiring a supervisor in 1977. Mechanically inclined, he enjoyed being the neighborhood handyman. He also enjoyed the outdoors. Survivors include two sons, Leo M., Eugene, and David S., Coquille; a sister, Marguerite Kantor, Elfreida, Ariz.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson. | Addie Belle VanDyke, 87, formerly of Medford, died Monday
(Feb. 16, 1998) at her home in Gaston. A private graveside service will be held in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6915 S.W. Macadam, Suite 130, Portland, OR 97219. She was born Addie Free on June 26, 1910, in Colorado City, Texas. She grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from high school she began a singing career, forming a jazz band with friends. The band played at many functions, including school proms, country clubs, Elks lodges, dances and fashion shows. In the 1940s, she moved to Medford, where she married Samuel Hoyt VanDyke on Oct. 7, 1945. Mrs. VanDyke moved to Forest Grove in the early 1980s, then to Gaston in 1992. Mrs. VanDyke was active in the Musicians Union, American Contract Duplicate Bridge League, and the Eagles Lodge Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Ann Shaffer, Gaston; a sister, Pearl Stoddert, Houston, Texas; and a granddaughter. Arrangements: Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home, Forest Grove. |

On Dec. 27, 1961, in Stone Lake, Wis., she married Don Fadness, who survives. They moved to Oregon that year. She was a 25-year member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Laureate Pi Chapter. Survivors, in addition to her husband and daughter, include a son, Jeffrey, Watsonville; her parents, Francis and Audrey Mattis, Stone Lake; two brothers, Allen Mattis, Houston, Texas, and Larry Mattis, Stone Lake; a sister, Susan Turman, Duluth, Minn.; and two grandchildren.
