| Roofing-material company must pay for
faulty claims Customers unhappy with an Oregon roofing materials company's products are entitled to restitution, state Attorney General Hardy Myers said Wednesday. Under a court order, American Cemwood Corp. of Albany must provide up to $6 million to customers in Oregon and seven other states. Out of 110 complaints registered so far with Myers' office, one is from Jacksonville, and the office expects many more, said Jan Margosian, consumer information coordinator for the state Department of Justice. "Thousands of people bought these products," she said. The cement and wood fiber composite roofing products were available throughout the state, she said. The Department of Justice says the materials failed to perform as marketed. Consumers were given up to a 50-year warranty, Margosian said, but in many cases the products failed or are failing well before the warranties expire. American Cemwood stopped making the roofing materials in April. Oregonians who file claims before Jan. 1, 2004 will be eligible for restitution. To file a claim for American Cemwood products, which were marketed as Cascade Shake, Pacific Slate, Royal Shake, Cemwood Shake, Trieste Tile and Permatek, contact Cemwood, (800) 367-3471, or call the attorney general's consumer hotline, (503) 378-4320. In addition to establishing the trust fund, American Cemwood will pay $200,000 to the state Department of Justice to fund future consumer protection and education activities. Disputes over claims filed by consumers are to be resolved through a mediation/arbitration process. |
