North Medford's Mary Bennion made the most of her time in the spotlight.
The freshman churned out the third fastest 3,000-meter time in Black Tornado history Tuesday in a 1081/2-341/2 Southwest Conference dual track and field win at Grants Pass.
With Brittany Dunn, the Black Tornado's top distance runner resting, Bennion triumphed in 11 minutes, 6.26 seconds, nearly 57 seconds better than runner-up Laurel Parks of Grants Pass.
"She's the type of kid who could be very successful," said North Medford coach Pete Voskes. "Every time she runs, she's very consistent in what she does, and she's competitive. That's a perfect combination in the 3,000."
Baylee Hearns clocked 12.7 in the 100, tying her for the sixth best time in Class 6A. Teammate Sara Weeks went 12.91, giving them the two top times in the SWC.

At Eugene, South Medford's Andrea Herman won the shot put and discus with marks of 39-0 and 111-1, respectively, in an SWC dual meet with South Eugene.
At Klamath Falls, Eagle Point's Kris Butler zipped to a time of 22.46 to win the boys 200 at a Southern Sky Conference dual with Klamath Union. Teammate Jacob Ringrose had an impressive time in the 110 hurdles with a 14.98, and Brandt Nevin heaved the javelin 165-11.
