Gifts of art

The Schneider Museum of Art continues to inspire visitors through its wide range of collected artwork donated by members of the community

The Schneider Museum of Art celebrates its 20th year with an exhibition of works from its permanent collection.

"Selections from the Permanent Collection" will be presented through April 28 at the museum on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

The focus of the exhibit is works on paper, and it includes drawings, lithographs, woodblock prints and paintings. Works by regional artists are represented, including Martin Baer, Rick Bartow, Bruce Bayard, Eugene Bennett, Keith Boyle, Alexander Calder, Rafael Canogar, Jose Luis Cuevas, Connor Everts, George Inness, Carl Jackson, Herb Jepson, Bill Kennedy, Rico LeBrun, Philip McCracken, Jack McLarty, Waldo Pierce, Nata Piaskowski, Alon Reininger, David Siqueiros, Gwen Stone, Mark Tobey, Esteban Vincenté and Sadao Watanabe.

In addition to "Selections," a series of paintings by a group of women artists in Mithila, India, will be displayed in the museum's entry gallery. The paintings were acquired by artist Betty LaDuke while she was conducting research for her book, "Women Artists: Multi-Cultural Visions." These bold, colorful paintings depict Hindu gods and goddesses and were often used as a means to support the artists and their families.

Masks from Mexico and New Guinea, American Indian baskets and Costa Rican artifacts also will be displayed in the entry gallery.

A collection of paintings by Waldo Pierce will be displayed in the Treehaven Gallery as a tribute to Bill and Florence Schneider, the late financial donors to the museum.

The Schneider Museum of Art was able to open its doors to the public 20 years ago after receiving donations of art and financial funds from the community. The gallery serves as a resource for fine-art exhibits and opportunities for community participation and education.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on First Fridays. Admission is $3.
