A Grants Pass-area woman has landed in the Jackson County Jail after a chase, crash and standoff with police that closed Highway 238 for nearly three hours Thursday night.
Initially hospitalized for a mental-health evaluation, Betty Darlene Taylor, 52, was jailed Friday on charges of felony attempting to elude police in a vehicle, reckless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
At about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety officers attempted to stop a 1981 Dodge Ram pickup that reportedly was driven by a suicidal woman armed with a knife and gun, Oregon State Police reported today.
The driver, later identified as Taylor, refused to stop and continued from Grants Pass at speeds of 55 to 60 mph on Highway 238. OSP troopers and Josephine County sheriff's deputies continued the pursuit. As officers followed the pickup, it crossed over into the oncoming travel lane several times, OSP reported.
Troopers from the Central Point office set spike strips near milepost 25 in Ruch that deflated two of the pickup's tires. Taylor continued driving for about three miles until she lost control and crashed into a ditch near milepost 28 at about 8:15 p.m., OSP Lt. Brian Powers said.
From inside the truck, she shouted that she had a gun and officers closed the highway while they settled in to negotiate with her, OSP reported. She surrendered after nearly three hours, and the highway reopened around midnight.
Taylor was taken by Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center for treatment of a minor injury and a mental evaluation, Powers said. Troopers arrested her when she was released from the hospital Friday. She remained in jail Friday evening on $12,000 bail.
