TODAY IN HISTORY

20 years ago: Hubbard's Hardware, Medford's oldest business under the same name, has been bought by Kent and Tish Cohee of Santa Ana, Calif. The business was sold by John and Kathi Ehrlich, who bought it in 1972 from the Hubbards. It was the first Medford store to have a telephone. (1987)

30 years ago: Steve Harthun, a senior at Southern Oregon State College, gained a berth on the second team of the Evergreen Conference All-Star basketball team. (1977)

40 years ago: A sheltered picnic deck was finished at Emigrant Lake last summer. The shelter has a fireplace, two sinks set in stainless steel drainboards and four coin operated hotplates. There are now 90 improved picnic sites at Emigrant Lake and 40 overnight camps sites for which a $1 per night charge is made. (1967)

50 years ago: Mary Caroline "Cal" Poole, 83, a Rogue Valley resident since 1875, died Jan. 3. She was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Francis M. Tungate, who made their first campsite upon arrival in Medford along Bear Creek, near what is now the intersection of Riverside and Jackson Street, which was heavily timbered at the time. The family homesteaded what is now the Frank Edmondson ranch in the Butte Falls area. (1957)

60 years ago: "Local and Personal:" Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Coleman and family, 1115 East Eleventh St., Medford, spent yesterday visiting Crater Lake National Park. Representative O.H. Bengtson spent the weekend at his home in Medford, enjoying a short vacation from state legislature sessions. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Emmens and sons Robert, James and William of Portland are spending a week in Medford visiting Mrs. Emmens' mother, Mrs. Una B. Inch, 602 Catherine St., and the doctor's mother, Mrs. J.J. Emmens, 1143 East Main St.(1947)
