Hot Crusaders rip defending champs

PENDLETON — The St. Mary's boys basketball team has found its offensive groove at just the right time.

The unranked and Southern Cascade League No. 3-seed Crusaders roared to a 21-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 67-34 pasting of defending Class 2A state champion Oakland in the quarterfinal round of the eight-team state tournament at the Pendleton Convention Center.

St. Mary's (18-7) moves on to face fellow SCL member Bonanza, the league's No. 2 seed, Friday at 8:15 p.m. in a semifinal game. SCL top seed Cascade Christian meets Knappa in the other semifinal.

St. Mary's trailed 2-0 just seconds in to the contest, but Robby Boggess and Jacob Midtlyng nailed back-to-back jumpers to give the Crusaders a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"Unbelievable, that's all I can say," said St. Mary's coach Rick Jackson of the upset win.

The Crusaders have had an up-and-down season at the offensive end. Until the last two games, that is.

St. Mary's shot 55 percent while beating Union in a playoff game last Friday, then shot 53 percent on Wednesday.

"I don't know what we found, but we found something," said Jackson. "We hit 3s, we hit layins, we hit everything we looked at."

Sixth-ranked Oakland shot just 14 of 50 from the field, including 0 of 14 from 3-point range.

St. Mary's led 45-19 at the half after drilling 69 percent (20 of 29) from the floor over the first two quarters.

The Oakers went into a halfcourt trap in the second quarter to try and disrupt the Crusaders.

"They had to try something to slow us down," said Jackson, "and we ended up shredding it."

"Ya know, Oakland is known to have the best man-to-man defense in the state," added Jackson. "They pride themselves on it. To do what we did tonight against their defense really says something."

Max O'Sullivan led four Crusaders in double figures with 13 points, while Chris Sutton and Boggess each had 12 and Midtlyng added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Sutton and O'Sullivan each had four assists.

Boggess hit all six of his shot attempts and Midtlyng, who was named the player of the game, was 5 of 8 in the first half.

"Jacob Midtlyng had the game of his life," said Jackson. "Overall, we did a great job on the boards. And, again, it was everybody that was contributing."
