Patient Vizzini, dominant Gutches advance to Class 5A finals

SALEM — Aggressiveness and patience are two attributes that wrestlers use to win state championships.

But it takes the right balance.

Crater's Jake Vizzini did just the right juggling act at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament Friday at the Oregon State Fairgrounds Pavilion. And it earned him a second straight trip to the finals.

Locked in a 0-0 tie through two rounds with Hermiston's Ethan Parks in a 140-pound semifinal match, Vizzini wiggled away for an escape with 58 seconds left and added a takedown seconds later to secure a 3-0 victory.

Teammate Brock Gutches joined Vizzini in tonight's championship finals with a dominant 15-5 victory over Mazama's Jacob Stutzer at 130 pounds.

The Comets' bid for a fifth consecutive team title went up in smoke when they labored through a poor opening-day performance but, thanks in large part to Vizzini and Gutches, they rebounded Friday and put themselves in solid position to take home a 10th straight trophy (top four).

Hermiston, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, pulled away from the rest of the field Friday with 172 points. Crook County stands second with 126, Crater is third with 112 and Hillsboro fourth with 108.5.

Eagle Point slipped into a tie for seventh with Cleveland at 66.

Roseburg, meanwhile, overhauled West Linn and jumped into the lead in the 6A tourney. The Indians, who advanced Mitchell Lofstedt (112), Adam Brink (189) and John Forrester (215) into the finals, have 153.5 points compared to 138 for West Linn. Grants Pass is sixth with 82 points and South Medford 21st with 23.5.

Vizzini, top-ranked at 140 pounds in Class 5A, used a methodical approach against the third-ranked Parks before finally opening up in the third period. Vizzini will meet Parks' older brother, senior Brent, in tonight's championship bout.

"I've noticed in the past that if I get all wired-up going against a real good wrestler, I get scored on," said Vizzini, who hiked his season record to 40-3. "And so in the big matches I take it slow and wrestle smart.

"I'm still pushing and setting the pace, but I'm waiting for the perfect shot and staying in position defensively."

Vizzini's opportunity came in the final minute of the match when he broke away for an escape and a 1-0 lead. Seconds later, Parks went for a takedown, put himself in a vulnerable position and Vizzini countered for a takedown of his own.

That was all it took for the win. Now it's on to tonight's title match against No. 2-ranked Brent Parks.

"I've put in a lot of hard work to get to this point and I don't plan on stopping now," Vizzini said.

Neither does Gutches, who seems fully recovered from a pinched neck nerve that had him removed on a stretcher from the Reser's Tournament of Champions three weeks ago. The super sophomore has rolled through the state tournament with two falls and Friday's 10-point win over Stutzer.

Gutches steamrolled Stutzer 12-0 in the finals of the Southern Sky Conference district tournament and it was more of the same Friday.

"It's easy to underestimate someone when you beat them bad at district, but I wasn't going to do that," Gutches said. "I was going to wrestle hard the whole time."

The Comets' Will Smith (145), Shawn Ogle (152) and Nick Ryan (215) all lost their semifinal bouts, as did Eagle Point's Blake Platt (125) and Marcus Wyatt (171).

South Medford's lone competitor to reach the 6A semifinal round — Cody Knudsen — had the misfortune of tangling with Sprague sensation R.J. Pena, the nation's top-ranked 125-pounder. Pena scored a fall in 1:33.
