TODAY

Chinese New Year, the Year of the Pig, will be celebrated today in Jacksonville, beginning with a parade at 10 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Children's Museum will offer origami, calligraphy, fortune-telling and craft demonstrations, a Dragon Jump 'n Play House and Monkey-King photo board. All events at the Children's Museum are free. Other events will include historical talks and book signings, free children's games and crafts at the IOOF Hall, a Chinese dim sum cooking demonstration at the McCully House, martial arts demonstrations at Warren Lodge and songs, dances and Chinese opera at the U.S. Hotel.

-- The 30th Annual Street Rod and Custom Show will be held today and Sunday at the Jackson County Exposition Center, 1 Peninger Road, Central Point. Show hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The family-friendly event includes street rods, custom cars, speciality vehicles from throughout western states, concession stands, commercial vendors, a children's coloring contest and valve-cover races. Admission is $7, $2 for kids ages 6-12 and free for children under 6 and to members of the military in uniform. Proceeds benefit the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center of Oregon Health Sciences University for treatment of medically-disabled children from Southern Oregon. Call 665-1553.

  • Kid's Imagination Discovery Place, 226 N. Ross Lane, Medford is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Today's 11 a.m. activity will be silk painting. -- "A View from Space" at ScienceWorks in Ashland offers visitors a chance to become scientists and study our planet through satellite images. Planetarium shows will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sundays. The exhibit will run through May 5 at ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7.50, $5 for children ages 2-12 and seniors over 65. Group rates are available.   • Famous for her wild stories and songs about roly-poly caterpillars, waiters spilling water and chefs making ravioli, Ann-Louise Sterry returns for three performances at Jackson County libraries this week. Each free performance is 45 minutes long with refreshments served 30 minutes before each performance. The schedule is:
