Little comes up large for Sheldon

Kendra Little had a big role as sixth-ranked Sheldon solidified its hold on first place in the Southwest Conference girls basketball standings.

The Irish sharp-shooter scored 12 of her team's first 14 points in a 47-36 win over host and second-place North Medford Saturday.

"If she's not the player of the year in the conference, there's something wrong," Black Tornado coach Tim Karrick said of the 5-foot-11 wing. "She's very, very good."

Sheldon improved to 10-0 in the conference. Tenth-ranked North is 15-5 and 7-3.

Sheldon built a 26-15 first-half lead before the Tornado rallied in the third quarter, cutting its deficit to six points.

But the Irish responded in kind as Little made a couple of 3-pointers and Sheldon built its lead back to 16, then staved off a final-quarter rally by North.

"We just picked a bad night not to play well," said Karrick. "We struggled in a lot of areas, and Sheldon played well. Our girls never quit, but they're a good basketball team, there's no doubt about that. They're big and very good."

Little scored 22 points.

North was led by Erica Schultz with 15 and Megan Ross with 11.
