Mustangs gallop past Marist in second round

MURPHY — Hidden Valley used an effective running game and an opportunistic defense to defeat Marist 31-21 in the second round of the Class 4A state football playoffs Friday.

The Skyline Conference champion Mustangs (9-2) advance to the state quarterfinals next Friday or Saturday against the winner of today's Yamhill-Carlton at Ontario matchup.

Hidden Valley forced three turnovers in the game played in muddy conditions at Mustangs Field. The first two led to a 14-0 Hidden Valley lead and the final turnover ended any chance of a Spartan comeback.

"We dominated the football game," Hidden Valley coach Jim Figoni said. "We actually played better than I thought we were going to because the field conditions were absolutely horrendous."

On the third play of the game, Jeremy Carter recovered a fumble by Colton Thomas at the Spartan 23. Junior running back Jules DeVos scored from 9 yards out five plays later to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

Jordan VanCleave's 40-yard interception return to the Marist 36 set up a DeVos 4-yard touchdown run with 7:20 left in the second period.

VanCleave caught an 11-yard TD pass from quarterback L.B Draper with 47 seconds remaining before halftime to put the Mustangs up 20-7, but Marist answered with a 41-yard touchdown play from Ryan Bell to Thomas with just 18 seconds to go to cut the Mustangs' lead to six points at halftime.

"That kept them in the game," said Figoni.

In the second half, Dustin Fox's third-quarter, 17-yard TD run upped the Mustangs' lead to 28-14, but Marist answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jerran Johnston with 7:49 left in the game.

A 25-yard field goal by Jordan Nielsen with 3:43 remaining put the Mustangs up by two scores, 31-21.

But again Marist came storming back. The Spartans, who won the Class 3A state title last year, drove deep into Mustang territory until Brandon Henson's interception at the Hidden Valley 1 ended the last Marist opportunity.

"They're a dangerous team," said Figoni. "Except for a couple of plays we played great defensively. We physically controlled the game."

DeVos was responsible for the bulk of Hidden Valley's 184 rushing yards with 147 yards on 26 carries. Draper passed for 64 more yards.

For Marist, Bell completed 10 of 17 passes for 216 yards with two interceptions. The Spartans were limited to 102 yards on the ground.

Marist (8-4) played without star running back Brandon Jackson, who is headed to the University of California on a football scholarship, and lost junior starting quarterback Tommy Stewart to a broken arm in the Sky Em finale two weeks ago.

If Hidden Valley is victorious in its quarterfinal game next week, Figoni said it will be the first 10-win season in school history.
