Conflict between the Gold Hill City Council and its chief of police is nothing new. Here are some examples gleaned from Mail Tribune archives from the 1960s and 1980s.
May 5, 1961: Gold Hill Police Chief Resigns. "Disagreement between members of the Gold Hill City Council and Police Chief L.R. 'Roy' Harrison as to who is responsible for police work ended with the officer submitting his resignation to the council this week. Harrison said he felt it was impossible to tolerate 'continuing interference of individual members of the council.'"
Nov. 10, 1964: Resignation of Gold Hill Police Chief Accepted. "The Gold Hill City Council has accepted the resignation of Police Chief David L. Mackey, effective Nov. 6. ... Mackey had submitted his resignation Oct. 18 stating that he did not have the full support of the council and would be 'wasting his time' to remain as police chief."
Aug. 11, 1967: Gold Hill Police Chief Discharged. "Charles R. Williams, chief of police in Gold Hill since May 1, was discharged by the City Council last night following a special executive session of that group. ... City officials said Williams was dismissed because of lack of rapport between the police department and other city departments and officials."
Dec. 6, 1983: Gold Hill Police Chief Quits, Lays Off Patrolman. "Barring an unlikely change of attitude on the City Council, Gold Hill once again will be without police services. Police Chief Gary Ames submitted his resignation — effective Friday — at a Monday night council meeting. He said he laid off patrolman Harry LeVine effective the same day. The Police Department budget wouldn't support two employees for the rest of the fiscal year, Ames said. ... 'I don't have a working agreement with them,' he said. 'I was told the personnel regulations don't apply to me.'"
