The Klamath Falls man who accidentally shot another hunter east of Ashland earlier this month was charged Friday with a misdemeanor, police said.
Cole Reeves, 36, was cited for negligently wounding another based on an investigation completed by Jackson County sheriff's detectives.
The charge carries a maximum jail sentence of six month and a fine of up to $500.
"We spoke with Mr. Reeves today and felt he was being honest about his actions that day," Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan said. "His story kept with previous statement he has made."
Medford resident Glen Bogart remained hospitalized in the Rogue Valley Medical Center in fair condition, a nursing supervisor said.
Bogart was standing next to a Forest Service road northeast of Howard Prairie when he was struck in the back by a 7mm bullet fired by Reeves.
Reeves told detectives he was shooting at a blacktail buck and missed.
Bogart's condition became critical soon after entering the hospital. At one point he was unconscious and on a ventilator due to a damaged left lung. On Sunday, his condition improved as he started breathing and eating on his own. Fagan said the case has now been turned over to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office for review.
