Delaney releases debut recording
The band's new style evolved from its members' love of rock music
The rock band Delaney is taking to the Pacific Northwest with a debut recording under its wing. The self-titled EP marks what the band members hope will be a successful music career.
According to the band's Web site, the band was founded by bassist and songwriter Bobby Seus. The members come from far and wide. Seus had played with countless bands and individuals for a number of years. These experiences, both good and bad, proved to him that only a combination of talent, drive and commitment from every band member would provide for a successful music career. So in forming Delaney, Seus wanted to call together the most passionate and skillful musicians he'd played with in the past.
This might seem like an obvious and straight-forward task. But the Web site states that after looking over his first choice of musicians to enlist, Seus had no idea if the individuals could even coexist, much less make great music together. Each came from different musical backgrounds and were in different life situations.
Guitarist Lee Barbara was working in Seattle as a jazz musician and singer while holding down multiple jobs and living in a closet-sized apartment. A longtime friend of Seus', they had played in jazz and wedding bands together through high school.
On the other side of the country, Seus was playing in a Guns n' Roses tribute band with guitarist Matt Marnocha in South Bend, Ind. Seus and Marnocha had met in college as music students.
Keyboard player Mike Maimone was living in Chicago and working for a forensic accounting firm. He and Seus had played in a college reggae/rock band together. But after graduation, Maimone had started a career in accounting, rented an apartment he couldn't afford and purchased a bedroom furniture set.
Mike Fremeau, a marching band drumline veteran, was working as a repossession-man in Michigan. He and Seus were college roommates who had played in a pop/rock cover band together.
Although the musicians had never met, Seus felt sure that this band would be the one that each member had prepared to be a musician for — that being that Delaney is a group of very different individuals who share a desire to create music to make a paid living.
Musically, the members of Delaney share influences that range from the Beatles to Weezer, Miles Davis to Steve Vai and Phish to Rooney. Their diverse tastes blend into one new rock sound that has proved to be a prolific one for the group.
Their initial recording session in January that started as a four-song demo CD became Delaney's self-produced eight-track debut. "Delaney" was released in April.
The EP was recorded in Medford, Chicago and South Bend, produced by Mike Hassenpflug and Delaney in Minneapolis and Medford and mastered by Manny Sanches at the IV Lab in Chicago.
After a schedule of summer shows, the band's members plan to relocate to Portland and tour the country more extensively. See delaneyband.com on the Web.
