Motorcyclist jailed after riding at 120 mph on I-5
A California man remains jailed in Jackson County after Oregon State Police stopped him for speeding at more than 110 mph on Interstate 5 near Ashland Sunday.
A senior trooper spotted Benjamin Jay Brooks, 25, of Grand Terrace, Calif., riding a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle at speeds estimated in excess of 120 mph at about 9 a.m. Sunday near I-5 milepost 13, an OSP news release said.
The trooper pursued Brooks and saw the motorcycle pass between vehicles as it sped down the freeway's center line. The officer estimated the motorcycle traveled at speeds of 100 to 110 mph during the chase.
Police stopped Brooks just south of Medford and arrested him on a charge of reckless driving and an Oregon warrant charging that he had failed to appear on a domestic violence-strangulation charge in Linn County. He also was cited for operating a motorcycle without insurance and without the proper license endorsement.
He remained in the Jackson County Jail Monday on $13,000 bail.
A trooper assisting in the arrest drove a newly issued 2006 Dodge Charger patrol car. Oregon State Police troopers recently have begun using these vehicles to patrol Oregon highways and the one used Sunday is the first assigned to OSP's Central Point office, the agency said in its release.
