3-on-3 hoop event begins Saturday in Medford
Basketball players will flood south Fir Street in Medford by the dozens this weekend for the second annual NBC 5/Avista 3-on-3 tournament.
Tournament director Bob Wise expects an increase in teams and players from the inaugural event last year when 85 teams and roughly 300 participants crowded the pavement in front of KOBI-TV.
Games will kick off at 9 a.m. on both Saturday at Sunday.
"We think this is a neat asset to our community," Wise said. "It brings a great family event to downtown Medford. And of course anyone who wants to come and watch is
welcome."
The festivities will include a slam dunk contest at noon Saturday and 3-point contests throughout.
The tournament features numerous divisions that divide teams according to age, gender and ability levels. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of three games.
Those interested in playing who have yet to register may fill out forms at KOBI-TV, 125 S. Fir St., or register on-line at KOBI5.com until 4 p.m. today. Check-in is between 4-7 p.m. today at the
Red Lion Hotel.
Teams have registered from as far away as Portland and Redding, Calif., Wise said.
Food and beverage vendors will be on site, along with a fenced-in play area for children.
Wise hired World Events, a national group out of Sacramento, Calif., that puts on 3-on-3 tournaments, to help coordinate the event. Amenities include a special floor covering for the two main
courts.
A large portion of the proceeds will go to the Medford Parks Foundation.
