Fosenburg, Staller excel as Eagles sweep Marshfield

EAGLE POINT — Logan Fosenburg and Nick Staller weren’t in a giving mood Saturday.

The Eagle Point High baseball pitchers were downright stingy, in fact, as they combined to give up just six hits and one run in a nonconference doubleheader sweep over Marshfield at The Yard.

Fosenburg fired a one-hitter in the Eagles’ 12-1, opening-game win while Staller chucked a five-hit shutout in EP’s 2-0 nightcap victory.

Fosenburg, a junior right-hander who was making his first start of the season, served up five walks but wiggled out of trouble by inducing eight groundball outs.

"He showed good composure," Eagle Point coach Rob Cowden said of Fosenburg. "He had some walks but he kept the ball down in the zone and got those groundball outs. He pitched a decent game."

The Eagles broke open Game 1 with a seven-run third inning and terminated the contest via the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth when Shasta Bateman blasted a three-run homer to left field.

Bateman (2-for-4, two runs, four RBIs), Staller (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI) and Sam Birch (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) all wielded productive bats in the opener.

Eagle Point scored the only run it would need in the second inning of Game 2 when Rob Hulla hit a one-out double and eventually scored when Johnny Harvey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Eagles added an insurance tally in the fifth when Harvey singled, stole second, advanced to third on Derek Grieve’s single and scored on Birch’s single.

The two victories pushed Eagle Point’s record to 6-2 heading into Tuesday’s home game against Ashland.

    Track & Field

  • BURT WILLIAMS INVITATIONAL — At Shasta Lake City, Calif., St. Mary’s senior Isabel Keller finished among the top five in two events and the Crusaders posted two first-place marks before leaving midway through the 16-team meet due to inclement weather.

Becca Tribelhorn won the 1,600 in a time of 5 minutes and 58 seconds, with teammate Emily Volk fourth in 6:30.0.

The Crusaders’ 4x100 relay team of Mia Rawson, Hanna Heycke, Nikki Steinsiek and Kayla Eichamer also placed first in 55.5 seconds.

Keller took second in the high jump by clearing 4-6, and placed fifth in the 100 hurdles in 20.8. Kelsey Gross was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 20.6.

Ryan Greene was the lone boy from St. Mary’s to compete, and he finished second in the high jump at 5-8.

Rainy and snowy conditions forced the Crusaders to leave Central Valley High early in order to ensure a safe return to Medford.
