Since You Asked: Big plans for Big X property
Several years ago when ODOT (the Oregon Department of Transportation) reconstructed the Big Y interchange, now called the Big X, several businesses were purchased, including Burger King,
Hungry Woodsman and Dunhams Country Store. The Dunhams Country Store building is still standing, now surrounded by a fence. What are ODOTs plans for this building?
Murrey D., Medford
Theres big plans for the Big X, Murray. The property is owned by Northgate LLC, made up of Steve Morgan and Russ Dale, local developers, and Guy Farthing, a San Francisco investor. The
property is now part of a proposed 84-acre development called Northgate Centre.
Shopping, office and manufacturing spaces will fill the area that was the Medco lumber mill complex. The mill was leveled 13 years ago.
Developers say the project will cost about $220 million, provide 1,800 jobs and take at least 10 years to build.
The site is at the reconfigured "Big Y" (now a "Big X") in Medford, where Highways 99, 62 and 238 come together. It includes three of the four quadrants created by the
intersection of Highway 238 and Central Avenue.
As for the building to which you referred, we sent our Since You Asked investigators out driving around, and the only vacant building surrounded by fencing they were able to locate is the former
Hungry Woodsman. Morgan said there are plans to demolish that building.
Meanwhile, he said the Northgate preliminary plans are being reviewed by Medford planners, with public hearings to come, so stay tuned. He said they also will be doing a traffic analysis soon.
