Albert Carvalhal Silveira, Jr., age 75, of Medford, died October 27, 2005 in Medford. No services are planned. Interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Albert was born on December 17, 1929 in Patterson, CA to Albert and Margaret Silveira, and then moved to Medford in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Army from April 11, 1951 to April 3, 1953.
Albert drove truck for Interstate Trucking for over 10 years.
He enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Medford Eagles Club.
Albert is survived by his daughter, Carey Sodergerg of Capitola, CA; brother, Delwyn Silveira of Patterson, CA; six grandchildren: Quinn Soderberg, Jeffrey and Stephanie Silveira, and Elizabeth, Robert and Kathyrn Habara.
Joe C. A. Eckhardt, M.D.,
Psychiatrist & Environmentalist March 8, 1918 - October 20, 2005. Beloved father and grandfather Joe had an insatiable love for people and conversation and leaves behind many devoted friends.
A World War II medical officer, assigned to material salvage Unit No. 5 in the Philippines, Joe returned from the war to practice psychiatry in Houston, TX for 20 years. He served as Secretary of the Houston Psychiatric Society and on Special committees of the Harris County Medical Society and was Chief of Psychiatric service at Twelve Oaks Hospital in Houston, TX. He moved to the Hill Country of Texas in 1973 where he served as Clinical Director of the Kerrville State Hospital, a gerontology-psychiatric hospital in Kerrville, TX. He later moved to Palo Alto, CA where, years before, he had done his residency in psychiatry at the Langley Porter Clinic. He returned to the Bay Area to work with the U.S. Veterans Administration in Menlo Park until his retirement.
Joe became a resident of Ashland, OR in 1982. He was devoted to preserving the beauty of Ashland, serving on the Clean Air coalition for five years. He was a moderator in the Blue Dragon Bookstore discussion group from 1985 to 1997.
After family and friends, Joe's other great loves were his dogs and the outdoors. He was a political activist in forest issues and in local social and political processes, and he was published numerous times in the Ashland Tidings as a news commentary writer. He was committeeman for the 4th voting precinct. a member of AARP, the Retired Officers Association, and the Sierra Club.
Joe is survived by three daughters and sons-in law, Melinda and Jim Lober, Laurel Eckhardt and Michael Young, and Gail Eckhardt and Steven Britt; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Cara Eckhardt; seven grandchildren, Courtney and Eric Schmidt, Natalie and Arissa Eckhardt-Young, Blair and Byron Britt, and Aidan Eckhardt.
There will be a reception celebrating Joe's life, hosted by his family, on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Elfinwood room of the Ashland Springs Hotel, Ashland, Oregon.

John W. Harney
John William Harney, 65, of Medford, passed away on October 25, 2005 at Ashland Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on November 7, 2005 at Our Lady of The Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hillview Drive, Ashland.
John was born on October 18, 1940 to Anthony and Mary Harney in Williamsburg, Iowa. He grew up in Parnell, Iowa on his family's farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968 during which he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After living in Alaska and Kentucky, he moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979.
He was owner and operator of Harney Auto Service in Medford. He was the long time companion of Joan Robbins who preceded him in death in 1992. He enjoyed bowling and was a member and the sponsor of the Harney Auto Bowling Team at Roxy Ann Bowling alley in Medford.
Survivors include four sisters, Jane Olson and husband, Keith of Minneapolis, MN, Marjory Weldon and husband, Harold of Parnell, IA, Mary Quinlan of Oxford, IA, and Elizabeth Harney of New York, NY; the children and grandchildren of Joan Robbins, Chris Robbins, Lynn Nilsen and husband John, Janet Turk and husband, Tim, Caleb and Meghan Robbins, Jenna Nilsen, Amber, Aaron and Terra Michalson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Harney, and his brother-in-law, Gerald Quinlan.

Joseph Wayne Palmer
Joseph Wayne Palmer, 85, of Medford, died Oct. 28, 2005 at Medford Rehabilitation.
Private family services will be held.
Joseph was born February 19, 1920 at Livingston, MT a son of John and Anna Palmer. He married Leota Carter in Long Beach, CA and have been married for 60 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII then worked at the VA Domiciliary as a Lab Technician.
He enjoyed photography and fly fishing. He was a past president of the Rogue Valley Fly Fishing Association.
Survivors include his wife, Leota; sons, Norm Palmer, John Palmer and Joe Palmer; daughters, Tobey Schmidt, Terry Golden and Tammy Palmer Runolfsson; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Keith Palmer.
Arrangements are with Perl Funeral Home.
Klaas van de Pol
Klaas van de Pol lost his life in an auto accident on October 18, 2005 near Bend, Oregon. He was 79 years old. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
Born January 19, 1926 in Koog aan de Zaan, the Netherlands, Klaas lived a rich and adventuresome life that took him to many parts of the world.
During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Klaas assisted the underground forces while hiding on a Dutch farm in order to avoid transportation to the German arms factories.
After the war ended, Klaas attended Delft University where he earned his Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his studies at Delft, he met his future bride, Conny, while sailing on the Loosdrecht Lakes.
Klaas accepted a position with the Arabian-American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in Saudi Arabia and in 1955 convinced his bride, Conny, to join him. They would spend the next 30 years there working, traveling, and raising their daughters, Michele and Conny.
Klaas's love of adventure found the couple on many worldwide trips, including driving from the Netherlands to Saudi Arabia four times, once with their daughters.
They retired in 1985 and moved to Ashland, Oregon, a town they fell in love with while visiting their daughter, Conny, who was attending SOSC.
In his early years of retirement, Klaas involved himself with the construction of their home near Emigrant Lake. He volunteered his time with the Women's League of Voters and also with the City Council regarding the Ashland Waste Water Management plan. In 1997, Klaas raced off to the center of Ashland with his favorite wheelbarrow and shovel to help fellow citizens clean up after the flood.
Klaas is survived by his loving wife, Conny: daughters, Michele Gillette and Conny Bubb; sons-in-law, Randall Gillette and Dan Bubb; and three grandchildren, Danielle Bubb, Iasaac Bubb, and Madison Bubb. Surviving relatives in the Netherlands include cousins, Ineke van de Meulen, Ida Boone, Klaas van de Pol and his uncle, Willem van de Pol.

Leo Paul Hulick
Leo Paul Hulick, 78, formerly of Medford, Oregon and most recently of Cambridge, Wisconsin, passed away in his home from cancer on Tuesday, October 25, 2005.
He was born in Janesville, WI on July 11, 1927, the son of the late Nicholas and Katherine (Christian) Hulick. Leo graduated from Janesville High School, class of '45, and served in the U.S. Navy from which he was honorably discharged in 1946. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1952. After college, he settled in the San Francisco Bay area until he moved with his family to Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1967. He worked there at Snap-On Tools as a systems analyst for a number of years. In 1983, he became an expatriate working in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates until his retirement in 1992. He then settled in Eagle Point, Oregon until 2004, when he moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin.
He had four children. Paul Frances (deceased), Elizabeth (Mark Handley), Ann Hulick, Elaine (Dean) Patricia Hulick Carlson, and Carolyn (Ted) Mary Hartwcll, all with his former wife Patricia (Roney) Hulick. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lucas Bielcjcwski and Nicholas Handlcy, Frances and Charles Carlson, and Theron Franklin, and Louise Hartwell; his sisters, Mary and Irene; and nieces and nephews. Besides his son, Paul, Leo was also preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harry, John and Tom; and his sister, Ann.
According to his wishes, his remains will be cremated with arrangements being made by Nitardy Funeral Home of Cambridge. A private memorial will be held at a future date.

Leo enjoyed traveling, and by his own count, "crossed the Atlantic 37 times". He visited Paris many times, England, Cyprus, Mauritius, and most recently, Alaska. After his retirement, Leo cherished his A-frame house in Eagle Point, Oregon with its view of "his" mountain. He was enthusiastic about the senior citizen seminars program at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
He was a gregarious man who loved socializing, good conversation, good food, and wine, and classical music performances. He was also an excellent cook. His family and friends will remember him always as a remarkable man of great strength of personality and love of life. We hope to carry on his example of energy and enthusiasm.
Robert E. McCauley
April 6, 1918 - October 22, 2005 Robert E. McCauley, 87, of Medford, died with his boots on in Hurley, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 22, 2005. He was about 200 yards from his boyhood home.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. November 10 at Sacred Heart Church, with reception to follow. McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Inc. of Ironwood has been very helpful in assisting the family.
Bob was born in Hurley, the youngest of seven children, to Charles and Anna (Croll) McCauley. Bob graduated from Hurley High School in 1936.
He married his grade school sweetheart, Goldie C. Hendrickson on June 2, 1942. She passed away in 1993 after 51 years of marriage.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, stationed at Army Headquarter offices in Honolulu. Following his honorable discharge, he and Goldie settled in Ironwood. Bob worked for Alexander Ford and Gotta Motors selling new and used cars.
In 1965, he moved his family to Medford, where he briefly worked in car sales and then went to work for Boise Cascade Plywood Mill until his retirement in 1984.
His children described him as a hard working man who was always on the go. A devout and practicing Catholic his entire life, he looked forward to attending Mass. He enjoyed woodworking for many years and sold his handmade toys at holiday bazaars in the Rogue Valley. In his later years, he enjoyed dancing and was a member of various senior dance clubs. He was known for his smile, homemade muffins and always helping out family and friends. Bob was an avid Green Pay Packer fan and loved Airedale dogs.
As Bob's health declined, he moved into Anna Maria Creekside, where he continued to have a very active social life and enjoyed the many new friends he met along the way. He always wore western hats and came to be known as "Cowboy Bob." Despite the health limitations, he was always planning his next trip or activity.
Longing to see his birthplace one last time and about to enjoy his favorite meal of spaghetti and meatballs, Bob died suddenly in the presence of family and friends. He is home again, his ashes to be interred with his mother and father in the Hurley cemetery.
Surviving is one sister, Vera; two sons, Robert (Mary) and James (Betzy); three daughters, Roberta (Bill) Burke, Sunny McCauley and Molly (Jon) Cooper; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Remembrances may be made to St. Mary's High School - Sacred Heart School, in Bob's name.
Walter "Willie" Wassum
Willie Wassum, age 84, of Medford died, October 22, 2005. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, November 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Medford. The interment took place at Eagle Point Veteran's Cemetery.
Willie was born on July 20, 1921 in Sidney, Nebraska to Walter M. and Velna Jones Wassum. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1938 and the family relocated to Chico, California.
He married Joyce A. Whitmoyer February 24, 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy, being sworn in on December 6, 1941, through the end of the war. As a First Class Electrician, he served on LST 472 in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific.
Willie accepted a transfer with the Gates Rubber Company in 1963 to become Manager of the Gates Tire Center in Medford. When the Gates Rubber Company dissolved the Tire Division, Willie chose to remain in the Rogue Valley instead of transferring out of state. He worked for both Weiler Oldsmobile and Courtesy Chevrolet in their sales departments prior to obtaining his Realtor's license. He sold and leased commercial property until his retirement in 1997.
Community service was an essential part of his life. He was a member of the Medford Planning Commission and served on the Board of both the Rural Fire District #2 and Bear Creek Valley Sanitary Authority for over 20 years. He was an active member of Medford Crater Lions and First United Methodist Church until his death.
Willie is survived by his wife Joyce and daughters Melissa Kusnerik of Medford, Sylvia Annigoni and Wilma Fixsen, both of Sacramento, CA; five granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
