Phoenix falls 2-0 to defending state champ
COTTAGE GROVE Phoenix stepped up in class Friday in boys soccer, playing defending state champion La Salle close before falling 2-0 in a
nonconference game.
The contest was played here, roughly halfway between the two schools, so they could share travel costs.
The match was tied 0-0 at halftime, but La Salle tallied seven minutes into the second half following a nifty combination of passes. Its next goal came
six minutes later off a deflection.
"We really played a good game today," said coach Dennis Flenner of the Pirates, whose team would have played La Salle for the title last year
had it not lost in the semifinals. "We had a bunch of opportunities, but they have a great defense. It was a great match. We covered the field all
day long."
Phoenix, which dropped to 6-2 overall, got strong play up front from Kyle McKinnis and Kazuki Makamori.
