Ashland defeats South in a hard-fought SOC match
Third-ranked Ashland was pushed by a veteran South Medford team in Southern Oregon Conference volleyball Friday night.
But the Grizzlies prevailed in a four-set match, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 25-14, at the Panthers gym.
"South did a good job attacking and keeping us on our heels," Ashland coach Josh Rohlfing said. "We werent able to get into our offense, and it was the first time weve
felt that way."
Ashland (6-0, 3-0 SOC) got a clutch performance from first-team all-leaguer Jessica Walters, who pounded 17 kills to go with 16 digs and four aces.
"Every time we needed a big play, (Walters) came through," said Rohlfing. "Thats what you hope for when you have a player the caliber of Jessica."
Ashland also received strong play in the middle from sophomore Ruby Stocking and junior Maddison Thivierge. Stocking had five kills, four blocks, 13 digs and three aces.
"Maddison made a difference whenever she came into the game with her blocking and defense," said Rohlfing.
Setter Lindsey Stone had 42 assists for the Grizzlies, while Sarah Holgen added 13 kills and 13 digs.
"The first three games, South dictated the flow of the match," said Rohlfing. "In that fourth game, we came into our own. We were getting into our offense and being
explosive."
South Medford received excellent front-line play from Chenoa Coviare and sophomore Tori Glover. On serve-receive, the Panthers got excellent play from Marissa Towry, Emily Marshall and Peggy
Thompson.
"We just couldnt get around that corner," said South Medford coach Adam Wagman. "Its hard not to feel disappointed."
