Pirates pound Rogue River in opener
TALENT The Phoenix girls soccer team wasted little time asserting itself as a District 6 favorite.
The Pirates, who lost just two players from last years state-playoff team, got four goals from senior Marci Klimek three in the first 22 minutes during a 12-0 rout of Rogue
River at Colver Field Saturday afternoon.
Phoenix (1-0 Dist. 6) amassed 30 shots on goal while holding Rogue River without an attempt.
"It wasnt like we were shooting a lot," said Phoenix coach John Doty. "We were making better than one goal on every three attempts. Thats pretty incredible."
Klimek opened the scoring with goals in the third and sixth minutes. Freshman Carlee Storey notched the first of her three goals in the 12th minute and Sarah Giardina, who had just subbed in,
punched in another score 30 seconds later.
Klimek recorded her hat trick in the 22nd.
"We sat our starting forwards for half of the first half," Doty said. "We were trying not to pour it on."

Phoenix takes on Mazama Tuesday, then travels to face District 6 title contender Hidden Valley next Saturday.
"Conventional wisdom says the three of us (Phoenix, Hidden Valley and North Valley) are the favorites," Doty said. "I think Cascade Christian will have something to say about that,
but Im thinking itll be a tight three-way race."
