Bend defeats South in boys soccer opener

BEND — After a scoreless first half, Mountain View took advantage of a strong wind at its back it the second and posted a 5-1 nonconference boys soccer victory over South Medford Friday.

It was the first game for the Panthers, who have a new coach in Dave Kaufman.

"We were a little nervous because of the anticipation for the game," said Kaufman. "Mountain View is a very good, solid program. I think we played extremely well for 60 minutes, then we had kind of a small implosion."

Eighteen minutes into the second half, Jose Banuelos put the Cougars on top 1-0.

Senior midfielder Kyle Ross knotted the score for South five minutes later when he blasted in a penalty kick after Jesse Bright was fouled in the box.

"It was well placed in the upper corner," Kaufman said of Ross’ shot. "He was calm, cool and collected. Kyle played really well in the midfield for us."

Hogan McDonald scored the first of his two goals with 13 minutes remaining to put Mountain View ahead for good.

The Cougars also got two assists from Andrew Rodriguez.

South also got strong play from Chris Swartsley and Chris Mendoza, who left late in the game with a strained thigh.

"Regardless of the score, I thought the defense did real well until late in the game," said Kaufman. "Fatigue, nerves, everything kind of took over."
