Phoenix’s Klimek, McKinnis rebound at district

ASHLAND — Marci Klimek rebounded from a midseason malady.

Kyle McKinnis rebounded from heartbreak the day before.

The two Phoenix track and field athletes overcame difficult experiences to advance to the state meet in the Skyline Conference district meet Saturday at Raider Stadium.

Klimek, who had trouble catching her breath earlier in the season because of the onset of allergies, won the two middle-distance races.

On Friday, McKinnis set a mammoth personal record in the long jump to place third, but he was one-half inch short of qualifying for state. He rectified that Saturday in the triple jump with a similarly impressive PR.

While they were shining for the Pirates, Henley was keeping alive its boys and girls district title streaks. The Hornets pulled away from Hidden Valley for their seventh straight boys crown and nabbed their 21st consecutive girls title.

Hidden Valley led the boys and girls competition after the first day, and the boys were game on Saturday until Henley took charge in the 1,500 meters.

Hidden Valley led by nine points going into the race, the ninth event, and trailed by 11 coming out of it. Henley’s Derrick Waugh led a 1-3-4 finish in the 1,500, clocking 4:15.70.

"That’s where it started, and they just continued to roll from there," said Hidden Valley coach Stan Goodell, who is taking nine boys and two girls to state next week in Eugene. "I’m proud of our kids. We did what we could to hang in there with them."

Henley’s boys scored 221 points to Hidden Valley’s 169.

The Hornet girls outdistanced runner-up Mazama, 202 to 115.

The Phoenix boys and girls each placed fifth.

Klimek, one of the premier runners in the state — she was eighth in the Class 3A 800 last year — struggled with her breathing at midseason.

"After the Crater Classic, that was the low point," said coach Hans Voskes. "She was working so hard but running what was for her some pretty slow times."

She went to a doctor and discovered she had allergies, said Voskes. It took a week or so to get her condition turned around, and Klimek has shown steady improvement.

The junior was untested in her two wins, taking the 800 in 2:26.52 and the 1,500 in 5:02.70, both season-best marks.

McKinnis, a junior, improved his best triple jump by 19 inches to 43-4, well past the automatic qualifying distance of 41-2. He placed third.

"After yesterday," said Voskes, "he had his head down and was thinking, oh my gosh, that was my best shot (in the long jump). He’s a pretty good long jumper and thought that was his ticket. But he came back and turned the page. And it was a quality triple jump."

There were five of them, to be exact. Winner Joel Matchett of Henley flew to a mark of 44-8½ , and runner-up Nick Hayter of Hidden Valley went 43-11. McKinnis, Henley’s Skyler Morgan and Hidden Valley’s Ryan Vancleave all bettered the qualifying standard.

Also for Phoenix, sophomore Kevin Jantzer came in second in the 1,500 in 4:16.70, edging Henley’s Andy Guest by three-10ths of a second.

Hayter was named the boys field athlete of the meet, qualifying for state in all three jumps.

Henley had the other top athletes: boy sprinter Jake Warner, girl jumper Mikayla Morgan and girl sprinter Megan Mangles.

Hidden Valley’s Aaron Francis won the boys shot put at 48-0, and Rachael Richardson took the girls pole vault at 9-0.

Illinois Valley’s Jessa Fairbanks won two girls races, the 100 and 300 hurdles.

The Cougar boys had three individual winners: Dalton Reagan in the javelin, Sam Green in the 300 hurdles and Caleb Renno in the 800. IV also took the long relay.

Nick Waroff of Rogue River claimed the boys 400.
