Eichamer’s late goal lifts Crusaders to win over Pirates
TALENT — St. Mary’s senior goal keeper ShaLane Wilson suffered a head injury in an earlier match against Phoenix.
Wilson missed some time because of the injury, but in her third game back in the lineup she played an important role during the Crusaders’ 2-1 District 6 girls soccer victory over the
Pirates Saturday at Hagler-James Park.
"(Wilson) directed our defense around and she came out aggressively to get the ball," St. Mary’s coach Lia Kirkpatrick said. "She made some key saves."
Phoenix led 1-0 at halftime on Marci Klimek’s breakaway goal off a through ball from Ema Burr at the 32nd minute.
"We played well in the first half," said Kirkpatrick. "We changed a little on defense and tried to get the ball to our midfielders."
The Crusaders (5-5 District 6) tied the score 1-1 at the 81st minute on Shelsea Rawson’s goal in the upper-right corner of the net from 30 yards out.
Then with less than a minute to play, Kayla Eichamer one-touched a shot into the goal off a corner kick from Erin Chamberlain.
"We were ready to start overtime," said Kirkpatrick. "We just didn’t give up. We kept our momentum through the whole game."
St. Mary’s sweeper Liz Tribelhorn did a good job running the defense and helped keep the ball on the Pirates’ defensive end.
HIDDEN VALLEY 2, HENLEY 0 — At Henley, sophomore striker Kayla Fick scored on two second-half penalty kicks to boost Hidden Valley to the District 6 victory.
Fick’s goals came in the 61st and 78th minutes.
The Knights racked up a 14-4 shots-on-goal edge as they improved their District 6 record to 8-2.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, ROGUE RIVER 1 — Junior striker Sarah Brown continued her assault on enemy defenses with three more goals to power Cascade Christian to the District 6 victory
at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.
Brown scored twice in the game’s first seven minutes off assists from Whitney Winters and Molly Garthercoal.
Junior striker Brooke Keller registered Cascade’s third goal two minutes into the second half before Brown completed her hat trick six minutes later.
Rogue River got on the board in the 70th minute when Anjie Cashera lofted a shot into the goal mouth from 20 yards out.
The Challengers built a 7-1 shots-on-goal advantage as they moved their District 6 record to 7-3.
Skyline Boys
HIDDEN VALLEY 1, HENLEY 0 — At Murphy, Joe Guevara’s goal in the 52nd minute held up to send Hidden Valley to its fifth win in Skyline Conference play.
Tyler Stom set up the eventual game-winner with a pass to about 25 yards out, and Guevara did the rest as he dribbled past two Henley defenders and drove a shot inside the far post.
Greg Miller supplied a couple clutch saves in goal to secure the shutout for the Mustangs (6-3, 5-3 Skyline).
ILLINOIS VALLEY 1, ROGUE RIVER 0, shootout — At Rogue River, Illinois Valley goalkeeper Ben Latva stopped two of Rogue River’s three shots in a shootout to lead the Cougars
to a season sweep of the Chieftains (0-8, 0-7 Skyline).
Shane Robbins scored Rogue River’s lone goal in the shootout, while IV connected on all three of its efforts in muddy conditions.
District 3 Boys
ST. MARY’S 4, UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 1 — At Roseburg, high-scoring Duncan MacDiarmid tallied a pair of goals and Austin Grant added two assists for undefeated St.
Mary’s (9-0, 5-0 District 3).
MacDiarmid booted in a free kick from 27 yards at the 25th minute to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
St. Mary’s sophomore Martin Nelson recorded his first varsity goal one minute later off an assist from Grant to complete the first-half scoring.
Umpqua Valley cut its deficit in half six minutes into the second period on a goal by Jeremy Goebel.
At the 70th minute, MacDiarmid took a through pass from Grant at the top of the box and maneuvered to about 12 yards out before finishing.
The two-goal performance gives MacDiarmid 26 for the season.
The Crusaders’ last goal came in the final minute when a cross by Grant deflected off a Umpqua defender for a Monarchs’ own goal.
St. Mary’s outshot UVC, 20-6, and Crusader goalie Dylan Bourke recorded four saves in muddy conditions.
Senior stopper Eric Melchiori played an aggressive defensive game for the Crusaders.
