Local banking deposits exceed $2 billion

Local banking deposits pushed past the $2 billion mark for the first time this year as a dozen FDIC-insured institutions reported they held $2,118,466,000 on deposit at mid-year.
Banks reported $1,920,032,000 deposited here in 2002.
Washington Mutual Bank continued to increase its local dominance as it claimed more than one out of every four dollars deposited in Jackson County banks.
The Seattle-based company showed deposits of $544.9 million, or 25.72 percent of the Medford-Ashland statistical areas business at its 13 Rogue Valley offices. Thats a gain of
more than $70 million from 2002 when its $462.7 million in deposits accounted for 24.62 percent of the market.
The FDIC collects deposit balances for commercial and savings banks every June 30, while the Office of Thrift Supervision surveys savings institutions. The results were released this month.
No. 2 U.S. Bank saw a gain of nearly $45 million in deposits and climbed to 14.22 percent share from 13.35 percent last year. Umpqua Bank and PremierWest remained in the third and fourth
spots, but saw a marginal slip in their share. Umpqua had a 10.66 percent share compared to 10.98 percent in 2002, while PremierWests 10.17 percent share trailed its 10.26 share in 2002.
Bank of America pushed past Klamath First Federal into seventh place at 6.25 percent
No. 10 Evergreen Federal (2.5 percent) of Grants Pass, No. 11 Peoples Bank of Commerce (2.06 percent) of Medford and No. 12 South Valley Bank and Trust of Klamath Falls (1.74 percent) were the
only other institutions to improve their share.
Jackson County deposits account for 5.67 percent of the $37.34 billion on the books of Oregons FDIC-insured institutions.
Multnomah County leads the way with $11.58 billion or more than three out of every 10 dollars in savings and checking and accounts and certificates of deposit. Washington County ranks No. 2
with $3.76 billion in deposits, representing 10.08 percent of the states share. Clackamas, Marion and Lane counties all have between 7 and 8 percent of deposit share, while Josephine County
has deposits of $965 million, or 2.58 percent.
