Phoenix girls surprise with Skyline title

By DON HUNT

VALLEY OF THE ROGUE STATE PARK — The Phoenix High girls erupted into a noisy celebration when it was announced that they had won the Skyline Conference district cross country meet here Saturday.

The Pirates had apparently just pulled a stunning upset by edging heavily favored Mazama by one point for the team title.

But upon further review, meet officials were guilty of a scoring error. The adjusted point totals left the two teams tied, and Mazama emerged as the champion based on the performance of Stacey Travis, its No. 6 runner.

Each team sends seven runners to the starting line, with only the top five being scored except in the case of ties. Travis finished 19th overall and was four spots in front of Phoenix’s No. 6 runner.

The adjusted point totals had each team with 45 points.

The Phoenix boys, meanwhile, sailed to their fourth straight district title and standout Pirates runner Kyle Gillette added the exclamation point by winning the individual crown.

"Our girls didn’t have a very good day but the correction had to be made," Mazama coach Marvin Dykstra said. "What’s right is right."

Said Phoenix coach Bruce Timmerman: "It was tough to give back the trophy when it was literally in our hands, and most of our girls went home thinking they had won.

"On the other hand, this is the first time the Phoenix girls have qualified for the state meet since 1974. That’s reason in itself to be pumped up."

The mix-up occurred when meet officials gave Kaela Ash 14th place when in fact the Vikings runner placed 13th.

Mazama junior Jasmine Klauder lived up to her reputation as a big-meet runner when she defended her individual title in 20 minutes flat over the 5,000- meter course.

Rogue River’s Allegra Fety, who owned the fastest time coming into the meet, led for much of the way but couldn’t match Klauder’s hard kick over the final 400 meters.

Fety placed second in 20:07.7.

"She (Fety) has beaten me four times this year but I was well-rested for this meet," Klauder said. "We had a team dinner last night and I got a lot of sleep."

The race was contested at 3 p.m. Saturday when temperatures had soared into the mid-80’s. The hot weather seemed to affect Fety more than Klauder.

"It was very hot and I was sweating like mad, but I drank a lot of water last night and was well-hydrated," Klauder said.

Phoenix’s Amanda Phillips and Marci Klimek finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 20:30.4 and 21:40.2.

Lakeview’s Samantha Granberg rounded out the top five in 21:32.2.

In the boys race, Gillette sprinted to an early lead and hit the tape in 16:17, beating runner-up Ryan Tague of Lakeview by 42 seconds.

Hidden Valley’s Jesse Hart was third in 17:16, Phoenix’s Adam Chizek fourth in 17:18 and the Pirates’ Dino Rossi fifth in 17:22.

Gillette had run in the shadow of two-time state champion Nathan May for the past three years, but with May trading in his Phoenix uniform for a college singlet, Saturday belonged to Gillette.

"It’s been a little tough not having Nathan around to train with, but it’s a new year and I’m out here doing my own thing," said Gillette, who was second to May at last year’s district and state meets. "Today, more than anything, I wanted us to win the team title."

Gillette was able to conserve some energy for next Saturday’s state meet, where he’s expected to battle Brookings’ Scott Sanders, Astoria’s Tomas Morrissey and a handful of other runners for the individual title.

"Kyle had a goal of running 16:15 today and he came within a couple seconds of doing that," said Timmerman. "He didn’t go all-out by any means. He got in a real good workout for next week."
