Phoenix girls guaranteed state-playoff berth

TALENT — Phoenix guaranteed itself no worse than second place in District 6 girls soccer and a state-playoff berth Saturday.

But the defending champion and third-ranked Pirates don’t plan to stop there.

With a 4-0 victory over Mazama at Hagler-James Field, Phoenix set up a showdown at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hidden Valley for the league title.

Both teams are 7-0 entering the regular-season ending contest.

"The 12 girls for us who are on the field a lot are very, very confident right now," said Phoenix coach John Doty after the dominating win over the Vikings, who became the third league foe to not get off a shot.

"Their confidence is based in reality. They know where they’re at in the season and where they want to be over the next couple of weeks."

That would be under a state-championship banner.

Phoenix (10-2 overall) needed overtime and two shootouts to defeat Hidden Valley last year and nail down the league title.

Doty expects the Mustangs to try to take away some of the Pirates’ five-part arsenal — Larrisa Wiltrout, Kat Cox, Sarah Kieffer, Kelly Riley and Marci Klimek.

"But I don’t think they have enough to stop all of them," said Doty. "Great, you stop one or two, but we still have three others. So I’m feeling pretty good about that."

Defensively, center back Tamara Heryford leads the three-person back line that has limited league opponents to two goals.

Against Mazama, the Pirates had senior-appreciation day and began the match without their regular lineup.

Once the starting 11 took the field, it took Wiltrout six minutes to put Phoenix on the board. She made an acrobatic stop of a weak clear at the top of the box, controlled the ball and rocketed it past the keeper.

The score remained 1-0 until 10 minutes elapsed in the second half, when Kat Cox sent a similar ball back to the goal.

Riley tallied at the 60th minute off a Cox pass, and Robyn Singleton scored off a Cox corner kick five minutes later for the final count.

  • HIDDEN VALLEY 5, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Rogue River, Hidden Valley improved to 7-0 in District 6, in part with a significant goal by defender Bailey Southern.

Southern scored the final goal at the 55th minute, giving each of the Mustangs on the roster a goal in league play this year.

Hidden Valley’s other tallies were by Laural Willi (unassisted) in the first minute, Shea Ford (assist Erin Wilson) in the 10th, Bryel Nowak (assist Ford) in the 14th and Anna Hoone (unassisted) in the 29th.

The shutout was the fifth in league for the Mustangs and freshman goalkeeper Melissa Henner.

Hidden Valley (12-0-1 overall) is host to Phoenix at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a match to decide the league title.

  • NORTH VALLEY 1, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0 — At Hawthorne Park, Megan McDonald proved to be in the right place at the right time in leading North Valley to the District 6 victory.

Challengers goalkeeper Arica Cornwell dived to halt a long through ball sent by the Knights, but had the ball take a funny hop away from her hands and toward McDonald, who deposited the loose ball for the game’s only goal.

Cornwell posted five saves on six shots for Cascade (5-4-2, 3-4 Dist. 6), while Megan McElheran notched the shutout in goal for North Valley.

  • HENLEY 6, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, Heather Olliffe scored twice for Henley in the District 6 triumph.

Olliffe scored the game’s first two goals in the fifth and sixth minutes, and Tara Campbell tallied in the eighth minute.

Megan Mengels assisted on the second and third goals for a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Hornets’ other tallies were by Chelsea Hornbeck, Christina Hamblin and Jessica Westwood.

  • HIDDEN VALLEY 7, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Murphy, freshman striker Joe Guevara had a hat trick and two assists as Hidden Valley romped over Rogue River.

Abner Porzio added two goals and Steven Shafer and Danny Richard one each for the Mustangs.

Richard, Waren Hostkoetter, Kyle Lumsden, Tyler Nelson and Torrent Saunders added assists for Hidden Valley, which improved to 8-3 in the Skyline Conference and 8-4 overall.

Hidden Valley led 5-0 at the half.

  • MAZAMA 3, NORTH VALLEY 2 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama broke open a scoreless match with three second-half goals to edge North Valley in Skyline Conference action.

Mazama’s Eve Malgoza broke the ice about 10 minutes into the second half, only to have North Valley’s Chase Murphy tie the match moments later.

Goals by Carlos Manzo and Alex Ramirez put the Vikings (7-5, 7-4 Skyline) ahead 3-1.

The Knights’ Ben Maue added a goal with eight minutes to play for the final tally.

  • HENLEY 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Klamath Falls, Henley got goals from Sam Frazier, Philip Pena, Tim Melton and Zach Sunitsch in the Skyline Conference win.

All were unassisted except for Sunitsch’s, which was created off a pass from Jeff Salvati.

  • ST. MARY’S 2, SANTIAM CHRISTIAN 1 — At Corvallis, St. Mary’s rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to remain undefeated in District 3 play.

The Crusaders (12-0, 5-0 Dist. 3) fell behind in the ninth minute, but rallied in the second half behind goals from Duncan MacDiarmid and Michael Staver.

MacDiarmid scored in the 49th minute on a 17-yard blast off an assist by Josh Jones.

Staver’s game-winner came in the 65th minute after Aaron Nelson stripped a Santiam Christian player of the ball. Nelson sent the ball toward the Eagles’ side of the field, with Staver giving chase and then slipping a low shot into the corner.

Dylan Bourke registered four saves for the Crusaders, who outshot Santiam Christian 14-7.
