Church gets divine rebuild

A new gym, more classrooms in the works for Central Point Community Church

CENTRAL POINT — Tom Malot Real Estate and Construction is tackling a $1.7 million remodeling and expansion project that will add 23,000 square feet and a new outline to Central Point Community Church.

The operation began June 9 and will involve 50 employees and sub-contractors. When the project is completed next March, the church will have a new gym, 15 classrooms and a foyer.

Pastor Pete Slusher says the addition will enable the church to extend its cooperative efforts with Central Point Schools, including afternoon tutoring programs. To this point limited space has been a hindrance.

The remodel phase came first before the addition.

"We had to make sure the building was structurally sound before we could put up a new roof," Malot says. "There’s going to be a 60- foot top cap and it’s going to look like a bridge across the back."

The overall span will be 90 feet with a height of 22 feet.

Although Malot Construction typically builds houses, it has recently erected the 14,000-square-foot National Floor Building on Cardinal Avenue, a 3,000- square-foot Head Start office on Merriman Road as well as a 40-unit, 45,000-square-foot apartment complex.

Malot is embarking on a 43-lot, 8-acre housing project along with Dave Freel in White City known as Whispering Winds. The development will extend Atlantic Avenue all the way to Highway 140.

Malot also is working on the 40-unit Sprague Street Apartments covering 3.5 acres in Jacksonville.

"We’re keeping as busy as they’ll let us," Malot says.
