Skateboarder dies of injuries after jump from parking garage
A 23-year-old Medford man died Tuesday from head injuries he received when he jumped from the second story of a downtown parking garage Monday evening.
Christopher Lee Bitgood, 23, of the 1400 block of Ashbrook Drive, died at 11 a.m. at Providence Medical Center.
Bitgood and several friends were skateboarding Monday on ramps in the parking garage at the corner of Sixth Street and Riverside Avenue, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said.
When a security officer drove into the garage, Bitgood jumped over the side from the second floor, apparently to avoid the officer. He landed on the sidewalk at the corner of Sixth and Bartlett
streets and was unconscious and bleeding from his ears when emergency workers arrived at about 9:25 p.m., police said.
"Were continuing the investigation into this as an accident," Moran said. He said police will interview people who were in the area at the time to see if anyone saw Bitgood
fall.
Moran said four people were skateboarding in the garage, but some of them left before the fall. Because the skateboarders left when security officers approached them, they dont face
trespassing charges, police said.
Bitgood is survived by his parents, who live in the Rogue Valley. Abbey Funeral Inc. will handle the arrangements.
