Hilda Ellen Austermuehle

Hilda Ellen Austermuehle, 82, of Medford, died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. A private gathering will be held.

She was born March 20, 1919, in St. Gallen, Switzerland, a daughter of Jacob and Alma Rebsch Graf. The family moved to Chicago when she was a young child. In 1945, she married Fritz Austermuehle, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Austermuehle owned a French pastry shop in Chicago until 1965. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1983, and opened a bakery in Ashland, which she operated until 1995.

She enjoyed Switzerland, the mountains, traveling and baking.

Survivors include a daughter, Gretchen Krueger, Medford; a son, Fredric, Central Point; a brother, Albert Graf, Chicago; a sister, Leona Burns, Napa, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Basil Arthur Burton

Basil Arthur Burton, 88, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2002) at Heathstone in Medford. No service is planned at this time.

He was born March 5, 1913, in England, a daughter of Arthur and Florence Marie Hastie Burton. In 1967, in England, he married Ellen G. Hedges, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Burton was a London bus driver for many years before moving to Southern California in 1967. In Los Angeles, he worked as a maintenance supervisor. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1994.

He enjoyed classical music and motorcycles.

Survivors include two sons, Alan and Brian Burton, both in England; a stepdaughter, Ruth Amesbury, Eagle Point; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Winifred Ethel Frageman

Winifred Ethel Frageman, 83, of Central Point, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Alderwood Assisted Living in Central Point. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission, 409 N. Front St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of Archie and Gertrude (Robinson) Hale. On Aug. 30, 1940, in Randoorff, N.Y., she married James Frageman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Frageman was a secretary with the U.S. Air Force.

She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include a son, James, Huntington Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Sue Fisher, Central Point, and Beverly McDougall, Costa Mesa, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Ida Dalke Shurtleff

Ida Dalke Shurtleff, 91, of Ephrata, Wash., formerly of the Upper Applegate, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) in a care facility in Ephrata, Wash. Private entombment will be at North Acacia Court in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ephrata, Wash.

She was born Jan. 20, 1911, in McClusky, N.D., a daughter of Jacob and Fredricka (Hoffman) Dalke. On Dec. 31, 1938, in Canton, S.D., she married Charles H. Shurtleff, who died in 1971.

Mrs. Shurtleff was a clerk in retail sales. She lived in the Rogue Valley during the 1970s. She also lived in Alaska and later moved to Washington.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in South Dakota, the Rebekahs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Medford and the degree of Pocahontas in Medford.

Survivors include a son, Charles Hamilton, Hindsville, Ga.; a daughter, Ira Ardell Filip, Ephrata, Wash.; two brothers, Clarence Dalke, Sioux City, Iowa, and Alvin Dalke, Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Adeline Christie, Madison, S.D.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, and three sisters, Ella Dalke, Irene McDougall and Viola Parker.

Raynell Mabel Ott

Raynell M. Ott, 89, of Medford, died Feb. 22, 2002, in White City. Private inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

She was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Chelan, Wash., a daughter of Fredrick and Edith (Story) Wise. On Feb. 23, 1935, in Manson, Wash., she married Freeman H. Ott, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1964 from Delano, Calif.

Mrs. Ott was a homemaker.

She enjoyed reading, gardening and walking.

Survivors include a son, Charles, Medford; three sisters, Edna Anderson, Wenatchee, Wash., and Bertha Cozart and Mamie Cozart, both Chelan, Wash.; a brother, Nyle Wise, Chelan, Wash.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry; two brothers, John and Lester Wise; and a sister, Alta Garwel.

Hugh E. Hines

Hugh E. Hines, 89, of Ashland, died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2002) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Sparrows Point, Md., and lived most of his life in Baltimore and Catonsville, Md.

Mr. Hines worked for the federal government, retiring in 1972 from the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, Md. He and his wife, Virginia, moved to Ashland in 1979.

He was a lifelong Methodist and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Ashland.

Mr. Hines enjoyed his family, service to his church, and membership in the Masons and Shriners.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Seropian, Ashland; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; and two brothers.

Rulon Taylor

The funeral service for Rulon Taylor will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ward House at Grant and Taylor Roads in Central Point. Bishop Ron Wells will officiate.

Mr. Taylor, 80, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) at his home.

He was born July 26, 1921, in Aetna, Alberta, Canada, a son of John and Olive Taylor. On Feb. 26, 1946, in Salt Lake City, he married Erma Anderson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1959.

Mr. Taylor was a creative arts teacher at Crater High School in Central Point. He retired in 1970.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the India Front. During the Korean War, he was a captain in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Taylor was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for most of his life. He was also a member of the Train Operator Society and the Siskiyou Train Club.

He enjoyed woodworking, toy train metal working, hunting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Allan Grant, Pleasanton, Calif., and Dan Scott, Bend; a daughter, Louise Taylor Bodily, Central Point; two brothers, Reed, Buena Park, Calif., and James L., Atlanta; three sisters, Mattie Staniek, Los Angeles, La Verl Alexander, Riverside, Calif., and Lola Utvich, San Marino, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Friends may pay their respects at 10 a.m. Monday at the LDS Ward House in Central Point.

Sylvia Carol Young, 82, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at her home. Arrangements will be announced by Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Raymond J. Holmes, 87, of Medford, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Rogue Valley Manor. Arrangements will be announced by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Ellen Belle Ellingson

Ellen Belle Ellingson, 83, of Medford, died Friday (March 1, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Arrangements will be announced by Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Stanley Thomas Mooster

Stanley Thomas Mooster, 83, of Medford, died Friday (March 1, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Arrangements will be announced by Perl Funeral Home, Medford.
