Library project gets $50,000 donation
The money from Douglas and Jane Naversen will give Jacksonville’s facility a larger meeting room By MEG LANDERS JACKSONVILLE — The city’s new library will have a large meeting room, thanks to a $50,000 donation. Dr. Douglas Naversen and his wife, Jane, presented the Friends of the Jacksonville Library with a check to go toward a community meeting room that is fully accessible to the disabled and seats 100 people, at least twice the size of the room originally planned. "I was a voracious reader as a kid," said Naversen, adding that he saw the donation as a way he could give something back to libraries. "It’ll be a room that can be used by the entire community," said Kathy Hoskin, co-chair of Jacksonville’s Friends of the Library. From public hearings and private conferences to recitals and festivals, the city’s first large, wheelchair-accessible meeting room will be able to offer the city new opportunities. Hoskin said she’s excited about the large contribution. "It’s life-changing in a small community," she said. Donations are critical because the countywide library bond funds only the basic building, said Library Headquarters Manager Meghan O’Flaherty. "The (bond) doesn’t fund technology, computers, art, or extras," she said, adding that it doesn’t even fund land acquisition. "All the communities can use donations." Naversen will be one of the featured speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at the new site behind the Post Office, between California and C streets. He said he’s glad to be involved in the creation of the new structure. "I think it’s a wonderful project," said the 19-year Jacksonville resident. "I’d like to encourage other people to step forward and do something like this." For information on donations, check out the Web site: www.jcls.org/foundation.html.
