Construction work on four libraries begins in February "Library Lovers' Month" will take on new meaning in February when Jackson County hosts four ground-breaking ceremonies and kicks off construction projects to build four rural, branch libraries. "Given a choice, I would have staggered them out a little more," said Margaret Jakubcin, West Coast Regional Library Manager. "But it is pretty exciting." "I bet there's not another city in the nation that can say they're breaking ground on four libraries in one month," added Headquarters Library Manager Meghan O'Flaherty. The communities of Rogue River, Ruch, Jacksonville and Applegate will host special ceremonies to celebrate, Jakubcin said. Construction of all four branches is expected to wrap up sometime in the fall, she added. "There are some big plans already afoot," Jakubcin said of grand opening ceremonies. "We haven't built any new libraries in a long time." µ Rogue River - Rogue River's groundbreaking event will kick off at the new site on Main Street Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. Tentative plans call for members of the Master Gardener Program to remove existing plants during the ceremony. The foliage will be replanted when the new structure is complete. µ Ruch - Ruch Elementary School students are expected to play a large part in the ground-breaking ceremony on Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m., thanks to their work and contributions to the plans. The students have designed and will create a walkway from that connects their school to the new library site. µ Jacksonville - Friends of Jacksonville Library will celebrate their ground-breaking ceremony on Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. Activities will include a parade and performances by children. The event will coincide with Jacksonville's annual Chinese New Year Celebration. µ Applegate - Friends of the Applegate Library will host their ground-breaking celebration Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. An apple tree will be planted during the event. |
